Expert Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500 Catfish Special (25 00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500 Catfish Special (25 00) is a purpose-built machine designed to withstand the abrasive environments and high-torque demands of trophy catfishing. This specific model features a reinforced synchronized levelwind and a high-performance Carbon Matrix drag system. Maintaining this reel requires a balance of heavy-duty protection for the gears and high-speed lubrication for the casting components.

Step 1: Teardown and Component Audit

Given that catfish reels often encounter mud, slime, and heavy river grit, a complete strip-down is the only way to ensure longevity.

  • Side Plate Removal: Unscrew the three knurled screws on the handle side. Remove the plate and set the frame aside.

  • The Drive Stack: Disassemble the handle assembly, including the star drag and the curved spring washers. Lift the main gear and the drag stack off the drive shaft.

  • Levelwind Disassembly: Unscrew the line guide nut to release the pawl. Slide the worm shaft out of the shroud. Inspect the pawl for "flat spots," which are common in reels used with heavy braided lines.

Step 2: Cleaning and Grit Removal

The 25 00 series can trap debris within the synchronized gear assembly.

  1. De-grease: Soak the Main Gear, Pinion Gear, and Worm Shaft in a solvent to dissolve old, contaminated lubricants.

  2. Scrubbing: Use a stiff brush to ensure no sand or silt remains in the teeth of the gears.

  3. Spool Inspection: Clean the spool spindles and the centrifugal brake hub. Any oil on the brake hub will cause inconsistent casting, so ensure this area is wiped completely dry.

Step 3: Targeted Lubrication for the "Catfish Special"

The secret to restoring the 6500 Catspc lies in using different viscosities for different mechanical roles.

The Levelwind and Idler Gears

In a synchronized reel like the Catfish Special, the levelwind moves constantly during the cast. Using thick grease here will significantly cut your casting distance.

  • Maintenance: Apply Deuthlon oil to the worm shaft (levelwind) and the teeth of the nylon idler gears.

  • The Advantage: Deuthlon oil provides a slick, low-friction coating that resists water wash-out. It allows the idler gears to spin freely, ensuring the line guide doesn't "choke" your cast when throwing heavy sinkers into the current.

The Main and Pinion Gears

When winching a large fish against a heavy current, the gear teeth experience extreme PSI (pounds per square inch).

  • Maintenance: Apply a high-quality grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and Pinion Gear.

  • The Advantage: Grease stays in place under high pressure. It coats the metal surfaces to prevent galling and "gear feel" (that vibration felt through the handle). A well-greased gear set ensures the reel remains quiet and powerful during high-stress retrieves.

Step 4: Reassembly and Mechanical Validation

  1. Re-installing the Worm Shaft: Slide the worm shaft back into the frame and secure the pawl. Ensure the pawl is perfectly seated in the groove before tightening the cap.

  2. Gear Alignment: Place the pinion gear into the yoke. Seat the main gear onto the shaft, ensuring the drag washers are clean and correctly sequenced.

  3. Side Plate and Spool: Re-insert the spool and attach the side plate. Hand-tighten the thumb screws.

  4. Operational Check: Engage the clicker to ensure it provides a strong, audible signal. Turn the handle to verify that the levelwind tracks smoothly across the spool. Because of the Deuthlon oil on the idlers, the reel should feel light and effortless when the thumb bar is disengaged.
