Professional Repair and Service Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C (91-0 Black)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C, specifically the "91-0" black edition, is a transition-era masterpiece. Manufactured in the early 90s, this model combines the vintage robust frame design with the updated precision of the 90s internal componentry. To keep this iconic black round reel operating at peak efficiency, a systematic approach to cleaning and specialized lubrication is required.

1. Initial Teardown and Cleaning

Before applying new lubricants, it is vital to remove the remnants of factory oils and any environmental contaminants.

  • Accessing the Internals: Begin by loosening the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate. Gently pull the side plate assembly away from the frame.

  • Spool and Brake System: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the two white centrifugal brake weights on the spool shaft pins. Ensure they are not cracked or sticky.

  • Degreasing: Clean the main gear, pinion, and worm shaft using a high-quality degreaser or isopropyl alcohol. Use a soft brush to remove debris from between the gear teeth, as even a small grain of sand can cause "gear feel" during the retrieve.

2. Drivetrain Lubrication (Grease)

The drivetrain components are under the most mechanical stress. Using a high-adhesion grease is essential for longevity.

  • Main Gear Service: Apply Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the large brass main gear. Ensure the grease is worked into the grooves but avoid over-packing, which can lead to a heavy feeling in the handle.

  • Pinion Gear: Apply a light coat of Deuthlon Grease to the pinion gear and the yoke. This ensures that the engagement between the spool and the drive system is smooth and silent when you click the handle to engage the reel.

3. Levelwind and Oscillation Service (Oil)

The 91-0 model features a synchronized levelwind. Because the levelwind moves during the cast, it is a primary source of friction.

  • Worm Gear Maintenance: Clean the worm shaft thoroughly. Apply Deuthlon Oil along the length of the worm gear. This oil is light enough to allow the pawl to slide with zero hesitation, maximizing your casting distance.

  • Idler Gears: These plastic gears connect the spool's rotation to the levelwind system. Lubricate the Idler Gears and their mounting posts strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Avoid grease on these parts, as it creates "drag" that will noticeably shorten your casts.

4. Precision Bearing Care

The "C" designation indicates that this reel utilizes stainless steel ball bearings rather than bushings.

  • Bearing Flush: Remove the spool bearings (typically located in the side plate and the tension cap). Once they are cleaned and dried, add one drop of Deuthlon Oil to each.

  • Spool Shaft: Wipe the spool shaft with a clean cloth and apply a microscopic film of Deuthlon Oil to the ends where they contact the bearings or shims.

5. Final Assembly and Adjustment

  1. Reinstall the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the centrifugal weights are in place.

  2. Secure the Side Plate: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft and tighten the three thumb screws evenly.

  3. Handle and Drag: Reassemble the drag stack, star wheel, and handle. Ensure the "belleville" spring washers are oriented correctly (usually facing each other) to provide a wide range of drag adjustment.

  4. Operational Check: Spin the spool in free-spool mode. It should be silent and spin for several seconds. Turn the handle to ensure the levelwind tracks perfectly across the spool.
