Technical Maintenance Manual: Restoring the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000 (89-0)
The Ambassadeur 6000 (89-0) represents a refined era of the classic Swedish round reel, featuring a robust build that thrives on precision maintenance. To maintain the structural integrity and casting performance of this 1989-era model, a complete teardown and high-performance lubrication cycle is essential.
Phase 1: Deep Cleaning and Component Inspection
Before applying new lubricants, the "89-0" components must be stripped of aged, thickened factory grease that can impede the centrifugal braking system.
-
Frame Stripping: Remove the three knurled side plate screws. Separate the drive-side plate from the frame and slide the spool out.
-
The Drive Stack: Remove the handle assembly and star drag. Take note of the spring washer orientation. Extract the main gear and the drag stack.
-
The Levelwind: Unscrew the worm gear cover and remove the line guide and pawl.
-
Degreasing: Use a specialized reel cleaner or solvent to soak the metal gears and bearings. Ensure the worm gear is completely free of grit, as this is the primary point of failure for the 6000 series.
Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
For the Ambassadeur 89-0, standard lubricants often fail under high heat or cold. We recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil for their advanced "Aqua-Shield" and ceramic properties.
Applying Deuthlon Reel Grease
Grease is reserved for high-torque, low-speed components.
-
Main Gear & Pinion Gear: Using a small brush, apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the main gear and the pinion. This grease provides a micro-layer of ceramic protection that smoothens the mesh and prevents "gear feel" during heavy retrieves.
-
Clutch Mechanism: Apply a light coating to the metal-on-metal sliding parts of the yoke to ensure crisp engagement.
Applying Deuthlon Reel Oil
Oil is used for high-velocity parts where low viscosity is required for distance and fluid movement.
-
Levelwind & Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm gear. Unlike grease, oil won't collect sand and debris, ensuring the line guide traverses the spool without resistance.
-
Idler Gears: These gears synchronize the spool with the levelwind. Use Deuthlon Reel Oil here to keep the rotation light and effortless.
-
Spool Shaft and Bearings: A single drop of oil on each end of the spool shaft will significantly increase your casting yardage.
Phase 3: Reassembly and Fine-Tuning
-
Reinstall the Levelwind: Place the worm gear back into the frame, ensuring the idler gear meshes correctly.
-
Seat the Drive Train: Place the pinion gear in the yoke and slide the main gear onto the shaft. Ensure the drag washers are seated flat.
-
Close the Side Plate: Align the side plate with the internal copper clicker and tighten the thumb screws finger-tight.
-
Final Tensioning: Adjust the cast control knob until the spool has just a fraction of lateral play.
Maintenance Benefits
By utilizing Deuthlon products on your Ambassadeur 6000 (89-0), you reduce the coefficient of friction across all moving parts. This specific combination of grease on the heavy gears and oil on the levelwind system ensures that your vintage reel performs with modern efficiency and stays protected against corrosion in both fresh and salt water environments.
