Technical Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5601C JB (13 01)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5601C JB (Jerkbait), specifically the 13 01 configuration, is a heavy-duty reel engineered to withstand the violent mechanical shocks of jerkbait fishing. This model features a reinforced drive train and a dual-backstop system to handle the constant snapping of heavy lines and large lures. Because the "JB" series is subjected to higher-than-average impact forces, the choice of lubricant is critical for preventing internal fatigue.

To maintain the structural integrity and smoothness of this powerhouse, we recommend using Deuthlon Reel Grease for load-bearing gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil for the kinetic drive components.

Step 1: Breakdown and Component Analysis

Begin by unscrewing the three knurled thumb screws on the left side plate (handle side). Pull the side plate away to reveal the spool and the heavy-duty gear bridge. Given the aggressive nature of jerkbaiting, pay close attention to the anti-reverse pawl and the main gear teeth for any signs of stress fractures or rounding.

Step 2: Thorough Degreasing

Before re-lubricating, all old grease and environmental particulates must be removed.

  • Gear Cleaning: Submerge the brass main gear and the pinion gear in a solvent. Use a brush to clear the deep-cut gear teeth.

  • Worm Shaft: Clean the levelwind worm shaft thoroughly. In the 13 01 model, this area often collects debris from braided lines, which can act as an abrasive if not removed.

Step 3: High-Impact Gear Lubrication

The Jerkbait model's gears endure high-torque spikes every time a lure is "jerked." Using a standard lubricant can lead to metal-on-metal contact during these peaks.

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a generous but even layer of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the main gear and the pinion. This grease contains high-pressure additives designed to "cushion" the gear interface during aggressive retrieves, effectively dampening vibration and preventing premature wear of the brass teeth.

Step 4: Levelwind and Idler System Service

The 5601C JB utilizes a synchronized levelwind that remains engaged during the cast. To ensure this doesn't impede your casting distance, the lubrication must be as light and slick as possible.

  • Levelwind (Worm Shaft): Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft grooves. This oil provides a high-speed surface for the pawl, ensuring the line guide tracks perfectly even under the tension of heavy lures.

  • Idler Gears: These gears bridge the spool to the levelwind mechanism. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gears and their mounting posts. Using oil here instead of grease reduces the rotational inertia, allowing the spool to start up faster during a cast.

Step 5: Bearing Maintenance and Reassembly

The spool bearings must be optimized for both speed and protection against the elements.

  • Bearings: Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each stainless steel bearing. The "Dust-Free" technology in Deuthlon oil is particularly beneficial for JB models, as it prevents the fine particles often shed by braided lines from entering the bearing races.

  • Final Assembly: Slide the spool back into the frame and secure the side plate with the thumb screws. Reattach the handle and star drag. Test the reel by engaging the spool and performing several rapid handle turns to ensure the grease has distributed evenly across the gear teeth.
