Technical Service and Restoration Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600C (76-12-00)

The Ambassadeur 5600C (76-12-00) is a premier example of 1970s Swedish engineering, featuring the iconic "black finish" and high-speed retrieval system. As a vintage 5600C, this model utilizes a twin-bearing spool design that was revolutionary for its time. To preserve the mechanical integrity and smooth operation of this classic (76-12-00) iteration, a meticulous teardown and the application of high-performance modern synthetics are mandatory.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Vintage Care

Because this reel dates back to 1976, care must be taken with the brass and stainless steel components to prevent stripping or marring the original finish.

  1. Right Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. These are captive screws designed to remain in the side plate. Carefully pull the handle-side assembly away from the frame.

  2. Spool and Centrifugal Brake Inspection: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the two-pin centrifugal brake hub. Ensure the brake weights move freely on the pins and that the pins themselves are not bent.

  3. Drive Train Breakdown: Remove the handle, star drag, and the tension shims. Lift the side plate cover to expose the heavy-duty brass main gear and the pinion yoke.

  4. Deep Cleaning: Submerge the gears, worm shaft, and drive shaft in a non-aggressive solvent. Use a soft brush to remove decades of potential grease buildup or oxidation. All components must be completely dry and free of residue before lubrication.

Phase 2: Professional Lubrication with Deuthlon

To bring this 1976 classic up to modern performance standards, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil. These lubricants provide superior film strength and corrosion protection that original 70s-era oils cannot match.

Grease Application (Deuthlon Reel Grease):

  • Main Drive Gear: Apply a light, even coating of grease to the teeth of the brass main gear. This creates a protective barrier that reduces friction and noise, ensuring a powerful and smooth retrieve.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the teeth of the pinion gear and the internal slot where it interfaces with the spool. This is essential for preventing wear and ensuring the reel engages crisply when the handle is turned.

  • Release Mechanism: Apply a micro-layer of grease to the metal-on-metal sliding surfaces of the kick lever to ensure the thumb bar operates with a distinct, tactile snap.

Oil Application (Deuthlon Reel Oil):

  • Levelwind Worm Shaft: Apply two drops of oil to the spiral worm gear. Since the levelwind is constantly oscillating during the cast and retrieve, oil provides the low-viscosity protection needed to prevent drag and wear on the pawl.

  • Idler Gears: These gears link the drive train to the line-lay system. A light film of oil keeps the internal resistance low, which is vital for maintaining the casting efficiency of this vintage model.

  • Spool Bearings: Flush the bearings thoroughly and apply one drop of Deuthlon oil to each. This ultra-thin lubrication allows the spool to reach the high RPMs necessary for long-distance casting.

Phase 3: Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Insert the Spool: Carefully place the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake weights are seated correctly on their pins so they don't fly off during the first cast.

  2. Align the Side Plate: Position the side plate over the frame, ensuring the pinion gear aligns with the spool shaft. Tighten the thumb screws snugly but do not over-torque.

  3. Check the Line Lay: Rotate the handle several times to verify the levelwind is tracking smoothly across the front of the reel.

  4. Final Tensioning: Adjust the mechanical tension knob to eliminate spool side-play. Disengage the thumb bar to verify the spool spins silently and freely, confirming the 76-12-00 is ready for the water.
