Advanced Service Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500C3 (Model 99-02)

The Ambassadeur 5500C3 (99-02) is a cornerstone of the Swedish-made round reel legacy. Featuring the high-efficiency Ultracast design, this model utilizes a fixed axle where the spool rotates on internal bearings. To maintain the 99-02’s reputation for ruggedness and smooth casting, a specialized maintenance routine is required. Using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil provides the specialized film strength needed to protect these vintage components against wear and corrosion.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Component Cleansing

Success in reel repair begins with a surgically clean environment. Removing old, gummy lubricants is essential before applying premium Deuthlon products.

  1. Right Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the handle side. Carefully pull the side plate assembly away from the frame.

  2. Spool Maintenance: Slide the spool off the fixed shaft. In the 99-02 model, the bearings are secured inside the spool hubs. Remove the tension clips and pull the bearings for deep cleaning.

  3. Gear Box Access: Remove the handle, star drag, and the side plate bridge screws. Lift the gear assembly to reveal the drive shaft and the main gear.

  4. Degreasing: Use a high-quality solvent to strip all grease from the metal teeth. Use a brush to clear the "valleys" of the main gear and the spiral of the worm shaft. Ensure all parts are bone-dry before reassembly.

Phase 2: Targeted Lubrication with Deuthlon

Professional reel tuning relies on applying the correct viscosity to specific mechanical zones. We recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease for high-load gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil for low-inertia components.

Grease: Protection for Power and Torque

The internal drive train of the 99-02 handles the stress of the retrieve and requires the high-tack barrier of Deuthlon Reel Grease.

  • Main Gear: Apply a light, uniform coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the main gear. This PTFE-fortified grease prevents metal-to-metal galling and provides a silky-smooth cranking feel under heavy loads.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion gear extensively. As the primary link between the handle and the spool, Deuthlon Grease ensures the engagement is quiet and reduces the "gear feel" common in older reels.

  • Kick Lever and Yoke: Apply a small amount of grease to these sliding metal surfaces to ensure the thumb bar returns to the "engaged" position with a clean, mechanical snap.

Oil: Fluidity for High-Speed Systems

Components that govern casting distance and line management require the ultra-low friction of Deuthlon Reel Oil.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. Since the 5500C3 levelwind is synchronized and moves during the cast, oil is superior to grease here; it allows the pawl to travel without parasitic drag.

  • Idler Gears: These gears connect the spool’s rotation to the levelwind system. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gear posts. This maximizes the energy transfer from the spool, allowing for easier casting of lighter lures.

  • Spool Bearings: After cleaning, apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. This oil is engineered to withstand high RPMs without breaking down, ensuring consistent casting performance.

Phase 3: Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Reinstall the Drive Train: Place the main gear and drag washers back onto the drive shaft. Ensure the washers are seated perfectly to avoid any drag "hiccups."

  2. Frame Integration: Reinsert the spool and align the side plate with the frame posts. Tighten the thumb screws in a staggered pattern to ensure the plate is seated flush.

  3. Spool Tension: Adjust the mechanical tension knob until the spool has zero side-play but still spins freely.

  4. Final Verification: Crank the handle to distribute the Deuthlon Reel Grease. Engage the freespool to confirm that the Deuthlon Reel Oil has significantly increased the spool’s spin duration.

99-02 Lubrication Application Guide

Component Lubricant Type Maintenance Benefit
Main Drive Gear Deuthlon Reel Grease Maximum wear protection under load
Pinion Gear Deuthlon Reel Grease Silent engagement and dampening
Levelwind Worm Deuthlon Reel Oil Reduced drag for longer casts
Idler Gears Deuthlon Reel Oil Smooth mechanical synchronization
Spool Bearings Deuthlon Reel Oil High-RPM casting stability

By utilizing Deuthlon Reel Grease and Oil, you ensure the Ambassadeur 5500C3 (99-02) remains a high-performance casting machine, preserving its Swedish engineering for years to come.
