Technical Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500 (Model 78-11-01)
The Ambassadeur 5500 (Model 78-11-01) is a masterpiece of late-70s Swedish engineering. This "champagne" or "silver" era model is a collector's favorite, featuring the classic flat-sided plates and the incredibly robust fixed-axle spool design. Because this reel was manufactured with the high-precision brass and stainless steel standards of the 1970s, it is capable of performing at a modern level if maintained with the right chemistry. To preserve its mechanical integrity, we recommend a full service using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil. These lubricants offer the high film strength required to protect vintage metal alloys from modern wear.
Phase 1: Vintage Teardown and Cleaning
A reel from 1978 often suffers from "grease calcification"—where the original lubricants have hardened into a waxy substance that hinders gear engagement and slows the spool.
-
Side Plate Extraction: Unscrew the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully remove the handle-side plate. Note that on this model, the mechanical anti-reverse dog is a separate piece; ensure it does not fall out during disassembly.
-
Spool and Axle Inspection: Slide the spool out. The 78-11-01 uses a fixed axle that passes through the spool. Inspect the ends of the shaft for any signs of scoring or dark oxidation.
-
Drive Train breakdown: Remove the handle, star drag, and the two bridge screws. Lift out the main gear and the original drag stack. If the drag washers are the original white plastic or fiber discs, check them for cracking.
-
Deep Degreasing: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a degreasing solvent. Use a stiff brush to clear out 40+ years of debris from the gear teeth. Dry every component thoroughly before applying Deuthlon products.
Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
Optimal restoration of the 5500 is achieved by applying Deuthlon Reel Grease to the power-train and Deuthlon Reel Oil to the speed-train.
Grease: Protection for the Vintage Drive Train
The brass main gear of the 78-11-01 requires the superior adhesion of Deuthlon Reel Grease to prevent tooth wear.
-
Main Gear Teeth: Apply a light, even coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease. This grease creates a "cushioning" effect between the teeth, which significantly reduces the mechanical noise typical of vintage reels.
-
Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion gear extensively. This part is under the most stress during a cast-to-retrieve transition; Deuthlon Grease ensures the engagement is smooth and silent.
-
Anti-Reverse Dog: Apply a small dab of grease to the anti-reverse dog and ratchet gear. This prevents the "clacking" sound from becoming a metallic "ping" and protects the metal edges.
Oil: Restoring the "Swedish Whirr"
The 5500 features a synchronized levelwind that robs casting distance if not lubricated with a high-speed oil like Deuthlon Reel Oil.
-
Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. This oil is light enough to let the line guide fly across the frame during a cast, yet durable enough to protect the pawl during a heavy retrieve.
-
Idler Gears: These gears bridge the spool and the levelwind. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gear posts. This minimizes the parasitic drag that usually limits the distance of these older models.
-
Axle Tips/Bushings: Even if your 5500 uses brass bushings rather than ball bearings, Deuthlon Reel Oil is the ideal choice. Apply one drop to each end of the axle where it seats into the side plates.
Phase 3: Reassembly and Calibration
-
Rebuild the Bridge: Reinstall the main gear and drag washers. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly "clawed" around the ratchet gear before closing the side plate.
-
Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back in, ensuring the centrifugal brake weights (if equipped) are pushed inward toward the axle.
-
Mechanical Tension: Tighten the thumb screws in a staggered pattern. Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play of the spool just disappears.
-
Final Verification: Crank the handle to distribute the Deuthlon Reel Grease. The retrieve should feel solid and silent. Engage the freespool to confirm the Deuthlon Reel Oil has restored the spool’s ability to spin freely.
