The Ambassadeur 5000D (The "D" standing for Direct Drive) is one of the most unique and iconic models in the Abu Garcia lineage. Produced primarily in the 1970s, it is easily identified by its distinct teal-green finish.

Unlike the standard 5000, the 5000D does not have a conventional star drag. Instead, it features a multi-disc drag integrated into the handle (Direct Drive), meaning the handle will back-reel under pressure while still providing resistance. This mechanical deviation requires a specific approach to lubrication, as the handle assembly is part of the drag system. To maintain this classic, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.

Phase 1: Disassembly & Direct Drive Inspection

The 5000D's "Direct Drive" system means the handle is not fixed like a standard baitcaster; it is designed to slip.

  1. Chassis Opening: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws and remove the handle-side plate.

  2. Spool & Levelwind: Slide out the spool. The 5000D uses a synchronized levelwind. Inspect the worm shaft for "green gunk"—a common mixture of old teal paint flakes and oxidized grease.

  3. The Handle/Drag Assembly: This is the most critical part. Unscrew the handle nut and remove the handle. You will find the drag discs located inside the handle hub or behind it.

  4. Clinical Cleaning: Submerge the brass gears and drive shaft in a degreaser. Use a soft brush to clean the internal teeth. Important: Clean the drag discs with a dry cloth. If they are leather or fiber, ensure they are free of old, hardened oils.

Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

Because the 5000D has fewer moving parts than a free-spool reel, the goal is to make those parts as low-friction as possible to compensate for the "Direct Drive" weight.

Grease: Protection for the Main Gear & Clutch

The heavy brass main gear needs the high-tack protection of Deuthlon Reel Grease.

  • Main Gear Teeth: Apply a light, uniform coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease. This will dampen the "mechanical growl" common in these vintage teal models, resulting in a buttery-smooth retrieve.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion gear extensively. Since the 5000D is always "engaged," this gear sees constant action. Deuthlon Grease ensures it won't wear down over time.

  • Handle/Drag Interface: Apply a microscopic amount of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the metal washers in the handle stack. Do not saturate the drag material; just a light film on the metal will prevent "drag jerk."

Oil: Restoring the "Swedish Whirr"

The 5000D's casting distance relies entirely on the efficiency of the levelwind and the bushings.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. Since the line guide moves during the cast, using oil here instead of grease is the only way to get a decent casting distance.

  • Idler Gears: These gears bridge the spool and the levelwind. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gear post.

  • Bushings: The 5000D typically uses bronze bushings. Clean them thoroughly and add one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This provides a high-velocity film for the axle.

Phase 3: Reassembly & Calibration

  1. Rebuild the Gear Stack: Reinstall the drive shaft and the main gear. Ensure the "Direct Drive" handle washers are stacked in the correct order (refer to your specific schematic, as 5000D stacks varied slightly by year).

  2. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back in. Ensure the two centrifugal brake weights are pushed toward the center so they don't snag the side plate during closure.

  3. Tension Adjustment: Tighten the thumb screws. The 5000D usually has a tension knob on both side plates. Center the spool by adjusting both until there is minimal side-to-side play.

  4. Direct Drive Test: Hold the spool with your thumb and turn the handle. It should slip smoothly under pressure. This is your "drag."
