Ambassadeur 5000C (1969)
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Ambassadeur 5000C (1969) is a landmark reel in Abu Garcia’s history, representing the transition into the "Ball Bearing Era." This classic black-finish model features the iconic 4-screw side plate (on the handle side) and is highly regarded by collectors for its high-precision Swedish craftsmanship.
By 1969, the "C" models were the gold standard for smooth casting, but 50+ years of operation can lead to "grease varnish"—where the original lubricants harden into a waxy residue. To restore its legendary performance, a clinical service using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil is essential.
Phase 1: Archival Teardown and Cleaning
Vintage reels from this era require a gentle touch to avoid stripping the original brass threads or marring the screw heads.
-
Side Plate Extraction: Unscrew the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully lift the handle-side plate. Note that the mechanical anti-reverse dog in 1969 models uses a small copper leaf spring; handle this with extreme care as they are prone to fatigue.
-
Spool and Bearing Inspection: Slide out the spool. This model features a fixed-axle design where the bearings are seated in the side plates. Inspect the ends of the axle for dark oxidation or "burnishing" from high-speed use.
-
Drive Train Breakdown: Remove the handle, star drag, and the bridge screws. Lift out the main brass gear and the drag stack. 1969 models often feature leather or fiber drag washers. If they are brittle, they should be replaced with modern Carbon Matrix washers for better performance.
-
Deep Degreasing: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a solvent. Use a soft brush to clear out the valleys of the gear teeth. Ensure all components are bone-dry before re-lubricating.
Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
To restore the "Swedish Whirr," we use Deuthlon Reel Grease for mechanical protection and Deuthlon Reel Oil for rotational speed.
Grease: Protecting the Vintage Drive Train
The heavy brass gears of the 1969 model require the superior film strength of Deuthlon Reel Grease.
-
Main Gear Teeth: Apply a light, uniform coat. This grease provides a "cushioning" effect that eliminates the mechanical "growl" common in vintage reels, resulting in a silent, buttery-smooth retrieve.
-
Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion gear extensively. This is the hardest working component during the cast-to-retrieve transition; Deuthlon Grease prevents metal-on-metal galling.
-
Anti-Reverse Dog: Apply a small dab of grease to the tip of the pawl. This prevents the sharp metallic "clacking" sound and protects the ratchet gear teeth.
Oil: Maximizing Velocity and Casting
The 5000C features a synchronized levelwind that robs distance if not lubricated with a high-speed oil like Deuthlon Reel Oil.
-
Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. This allows the line guide to move across the frame with minimal resistance during the cast.
-
Idler Gears / Cog Wheels: These plastic/nylon gears bridge the spool and the levelwind. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gear posts to reduce mechanical inertia.
-
Stainless Ball Bearings: Clean the bearings thoroughly and add exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This provides the high-RPM stability and protection necessary for long-distance casting.
Phase 3: Reassembly and Calibration
-
Rebuild the Bridge: Place the main gear and drag washers back on the drive shaft. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly "clawed" around the ratchet gear before closing the case.
-
Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake weights are retracted so the side plate sits perfectly flush.
-
Tension Calibration: Tighten the thumb screws. Adjust the cast control knob (on the handle side) until the side-to-side play of the spool just disappears.
-
Final Verification: Crank the handle to distribute the grease. The retrieve should feel solid and silent. Engage the freespool to confirm the oil has restored the spool’s ability to spin effortlessly.
