Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2600 & 2650 (Pre-1975)

The Ambassadeur 2600 and 2650 models produced prior to 1975 are rare, vintage gems in the Abu Garcia timeline. Unlike the standard 5000 series of the same era, these reels feature a distinct "high-speed" frame design and a unique mechanical configuration. The 2600 is the standard version, while the 2650 often included a clicker or specific spool tension refinements.

Because these reels are over 50 years old, their internal metal alloys—specifically the brass and stainless steel components—require high-film-strength lubrication to prevent "galling" and wear.

Tools and Preparation

  • Precision Screwdrivers: Traditional flathead (thin blade to avoid marring the vintage screws).

  • Cleaning Basin: Filled with a degreaser or isopropyl alcohol.

  • Lubrication: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).

  • Parts Organization: Use a tray with compartments; these models use several small copper shims that are specific to their spacing.

1. External Teardown

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the screw holding the handle nut locking plate. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Pull off the handle, followed by the star drag and the spring tension washers.

  2. Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the handle side plate. Carefully pull the side plate off.

  3. Spool Extraction: Slide the spool out of the frame. On these pre-1975 models, the spool shaft is often fixed to the spool. Inspect the ends of the shaft for any scoring or old, hardened oil.

2. Internal Mechanical Overhaul

The pre-1975 2600 series utilizes a mechanical anti-reverse dog rather than a modern roller bearing.

  • Cleaning the Gears: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Vintage Ambassadeurs from this era often have leather or early composite drag washers; if they are not brittle, clean them with a dry cloth. If they are saturated with oil, replace them with modern carbon fiber.

  • The Drive Shaft: Clean the drive shaft with a solvent until it is polished. Ensure the base of the shaft, where it meets the frame, is free of grit.

  • Level Wind: Remove the worm gear and the pawl. These older worm gears have shallower grooves than modern ones, making them more sensitive to debris.

3. Lubrication with Deuthlon

For these vintage models, the goal is to provide maximum protection while restoring the "flick-of-the-wrist" casting performance.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a light coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth. This grease is specifically designed to provide a "cushion" between the brass gear teeth, which significantly reduces the vibration and noise common in 50-year-old reels.

  • Mechanical Anti-Reverse: Apply a small dab to the anti-reverse dog and the ratchet. This keeps the mechanical clicking crisp and prevents the dog from sticking in the "off" position.

  • Yoke and Kick Lever: Grease the sliding metal plates to ensure the spool release button operates smoothly.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Support: Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the friction points at both ends of the spool shaft. This oil stays in place much better than standard mineral oils, ensuring the vintage shaft doesn't run dry during a long session.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply two drops to the worm gear. Using Deuthlon oil here instead of grease allows the level wind to move with less resistance, which is vital for the relatively heavy spools of the 1970s.

  • Bushings: If your model has brass bushings instead of ball bearings, Deuthlon Cast Lube is exceptional at providing a low-friction boundary layer that mimics the feel of a bearing.

4. Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated fully before tightening the cap screw.

  2. Internal Stack: Replace the pinion gear, the main gear, and the drag washers.

  3. Side Plate: Align the side plate with the drive shaft and the anti-reverse dog. Ensure the dog "clicks" onto the ratchet before tightening the thumb screws.

  4. Tuning: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Tighten the cast control knob (on the side plate) until the spool has just a tiny amount of side-to-side play.

Maintenance Summary

The Ambassadeur 2600/2650 (Pre-1975) is a testament to Swedish engineering. By moving away from standard retail oils and using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Oil, you are providing these vintage components with modern chemical protection. The Deuthlon formula prevents the oxidation of the brass gears and ensures that the mechanical release remains as reliable today as it was in 1974.
