Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2500 (1969)
The 1969 Ambassadeur 2500 is a rare and historically significant reel. While the "2500" series is often associated with the mid-1970s, early production models from 1969 feature the classic "four-screw" or "three-screw" side plate designs and the smooth, round aesthetics that defined the era. This model utilizes high-grade bronze bushings and a mechanical anti-reverse system.
Maintenance for a 1969 model is about preservation. The goal is to remove decades of oxidized lubricant and replace it with modern synthetics that prevent wear on the vintage brass and stainless steel components.
Tools and Supplies
-
Precision Screwdrivers: Traditional flathead with a thin blade to prevent marring the vintage screws.
-
Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a non-polar degreaser.
-
Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.
-
Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).
-
Parts Tray: To organize the specific 1960s-era brass shims.
1. External Teardown
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 10mm handle nut. Pull off the handle arm. You will find two curved copper tension washers under the star drag; note their "face-to-face" orientation.
-
Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully pull the handle side plate away from the frame.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the spool out. In 1969 models, the spool shaft is usually integrated. Inspect the ends of the shaft—these are the surfaces that rotate within the bushings.
2. Deep Cleaning the 1960s Internals
Reels from this era often contain "varnished" oil—mineral oil that has turned into a hard, sticky coating.
-
The Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. The 1969 models often feature original leather or early composite drag washers. If they are intact, wipe them with a dry cloth. If they have flattened or hardened, replace them with modern carbon fiber.
-
Anti-Reverse Dog: This model uses a mechanical "claw" (anti-reverse dog) that grips a ratchet. Ensure the copper friction springs that hug the ratchet are clean and provide enough tension to move the dog.
-
The Level Wind: Remove the worm shaft and the pawl. This is a non-disengaging level wind; it moves during the cast. Any grit here will drastically shorten your casting distance.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
Modern lubricants like Deuthlon provide a "cushioning" effect that 1960s mineral oils could not achieve, effectively making the reel feel newer than it is.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main and Pinion Gear: Apply a light, even coat to the gear teeth. Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease is particularly effective for vintage brass gears because it dampens the mechanical vibration and "chatter" common in older reels.
-
Mechanical Linkages: Apply a small amount to the yoke and the kick lever where they slide against the frame.
-
Anti-Reverse Dog: A tiny dab on the dog and the ratchet teeth will ensure smooth, quiet operation.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Bronze Bushings (Critical): Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil into each bushing located in the side plate caps. Deuthlon’s high-speed film strength is essential for bushings, as it prevents metal-on-metal contact even under high RPMs.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. Using oil instead of grease on the level wind is a significant performance upgrade for 1969 models, as it reduces the energy required for the spool to turn during a cast.
-
Spool Shaft: Wipe a very thin film along the shaft where it passes through the pinion gear.
4. Reassembly and Calibration
-
Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the "diamond" track before tightening the cap.
-
Internal Stack: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly engaged with the ratchet.
-
Side Plate: Reattach the side plate and secure the thumb screws.
-
Tensioning: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.
Technical Performance Note
The 1969 Ambassadeur 2500 is a mechanical heirloom. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are protecting the vintage components from the pitting and corrosion that often occur with age. This setup restores the reel's ability to cast effectively while providing the buttery-smooth retrieve that makes vintage Ambassadeurs so desirable.
