Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2100 (Sportcast)

The Ambassadeur 2100, often referred to as the Sportcast, is a fascinating piece of Abu Garcia history. Produced primarily in the 1960s, it was designed as a "direct drive" or "tournament style" reel. Unlike the 5000 series, the 2100 lacks a traditional drag system (relying on "thumbing" the spool or a mechanical tensioner) and often features a narrower frame.

Because this reel relies on direct mechanical engagement and vintage bushings, the tolerances are incredibly tight. Standard greases can make this reel feel "heavy," while the right combination of Deuthlon lubricants can restore its legendary free-spool capabilities.

Tools and Lubricants Required

  • Precision Screwdrivers: Traditional flathead (thin-walled).

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or high-grade degreaser.

  • Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.

  • Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).

1. Disassembly and Inspection

  1. Handle and Side Plate: Remove the handle nut screw and the handle. Loosen the three side plate screws. Note that on many 2100 models, the screws are captive or have specific lengths.

  2. Internal Mechanism: The 2100 is mechanically simpler than the 5000 but utilizes a unique "anti-backlash" control system. Inspect the centrifugal brake weights—these are often larger or shaped differently than modern versions.

  3. Spool and Bushings: Slide the spool out. Most 2100s use high-grade bronze or oilite bushings. Check for any green verdigris (oxidation) on the bronze.

2. Deep Cleaning

  • The Main Gear: Since the 2100 is often a direct-drive style, the gear teeth take the brunt of the force. Scrub them with a soft brush and solvent to remove 50+ years of debris.

  • Level Wind: The 2100 features a non-disengaging level wind. This must be completely stripped of old grease.

  • The Bushings: Soak the bushings in solvent for at least 10 minutes to draw out old, acidic oils that can damage the spool shaft.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

The 2100 thrives when friction is minimized on the drive shaft and spool ends.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main Gear & Pinion: Apply a light, uniform coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease. This grease is specifically designed to adhere to metal surfaces under high pressure, preventing the "grinding" feel common in vintage direct-drive reels.

  • Mechanical Linkages: Apply a thin layer to the sliding parts of the spool release mechanism.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • The Bushings (Critical): Place two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil into each bushing. This oil provides a high-speed boundary layer that allows the spool to spin up with minimal effort—essential for the tournament-style casting this reel was built for.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. On the 2100, the level wind is a major source of friction; using Deuthlon Cast Lube here instead of grease significantly increases casting distance.

  • Handle Knobs: Place one drop at the base of each knob for a frictionless retrieve.

4. Reassembly and Tuning

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated perfectly in the track.

  2. Spool Seating: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the brake blocks are positioned correctly so they don't bind against the drum.

  3. Side Plate: Reattach the side plate and tighten the screws in a star pattern to ensure even pressure.

  4. Tension Adjustment: The 2100 is sensitive to spool tension. Adjust the side knobs until there is a "micro-click" of side-play.

Technical Performance Note

The Ambassadeur 2100 was ahead of its time in terms of casting efficiency. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are replacing outdated 1960s chemistry with modern friction-reduction technology. This combination protects the vintage brass components from wear while providing the ultra-smooth, free-spinning performance that makes the Sportcast a favorite among vintage tackle enthusiasts.
