Hardy Resonate
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Resonate is a precision-engineered, large-arbor click-check reel designed for light-line freshwater applications. Unlike heavy-duty disc drag reels, the Resonate relies on a mechanical click-and-pawl system to provide resistance and that signature Hardy acoustic feedback.
Because the Resonate uses an all-metal, load-bearing click system, maintenance is straightforward but essential for longevity.
Tools and Materials Needed
-
Clean, lint-free cloth: For wiping away old grease and grit.
-
Mild dish soap and warm water: For removing salt or dirt buildup.
-
High-quality reel oil: For the spindle and handle.
-
Lightweight reel grease: For the clicker gear and pawls.
-
Small flat-head screwdriver: Only required if you are deep-servicing the regulator screw (rarely needed).
Step 1: Disassembly and Spool Removal
The Hardy Resonate features a "push-off" spool release mechanism.
-
Release the Spool: Hold the frame with one hand and grasp the spool with the other. Pull the spool firmly away from the frame. If it feels stuck, ensure you are pulling straight out; the captive-nut system is designed to hold under tension but release with a direct pull.
-
Inspect the Spindle: Once the spool is removed, the main spindle will be exposed. Check for any debris, sand, or dried grease on the shaft.
Step 2: Cleaning the Components
-
The Bath: If the reel has been exposed to salt or fine silt, submerge the frame and spool in warm, soapy water for 10 minutes.
-
Rinse: Flush with fresh, running water. Ensure the water reaches the internal teeth of the clicker gear located on the inside of the spool.
-
Dry: Pat the components dry with a cloth. Use a Q-tip or compressed air to ensure the clicker spring housing and the spindle seat are completely dry before applying new lubricant.
Step 3: Lubrication and Maintenance
Proper lubrication is the difference between a "refined purr" and a "gritty grind."
-
The Spindle: Apply one or two drops of reel oil to the main spindle. Do not over-oil, as this can attract dust.
-
The Clicker Gear: Apply a very thin layer of lightweight grease to the teeth on the inside of the spool. This reduces wear and smooths the sound of the clicker.
-
The Pawls and Springs: Place a small dab of grease where the pawl contacts the gear and where the spring rests against the pawl.
-
The Handle: Apply a single drop of oil to the base of the handle assembly to ensure it spins freely.
Step 4: Changing Wind Direction (LHW to RHW)
The Resonate is easily converted between Left-Hand Wind (LHW) and Right-Hand Wind (RHW).
-
Locate the Pawls: Look at the internal mechanism on the frame. You will see two metal "tongues" (the pawls) held by springs.
-
Flip the Pawls: To change the direction of the "check" (the resistance), you must flip the active pawl.
-
One pawl is engaged while the other acts as a backup.
-
Rotate the engaged pawl so its point faces the opposite direction.
-
-
Test the Tension: Turn the regulator knob on the back of the frame to ensure the spring tension is applying correctly to the newly positioned pawl.
Step 5: Reassembly
-
Align the Spool: Slide the spool back onto the spindle.
-
Locking: Press down firmly until you hear or feel a distinct "click," indicating the spool has seated onto the captive mechanism.
-
Functional Check: Spin the reel in both directions. Ensure the "incoming" click (retrieval) is lighter than the "outgoing" click (drag).
Troubleshooting and Pro-Tips
-
Weak Click Sound: This usually indicates the pawl spring has lost tension or is gummed up with old grease. Clean thoroughly and slightly (and very gently) expand the spring to increase tension.
-
Gritty Feel: This is almost always sand in the spindle housing. Remove the spool and wipe the spindle clean. If it persists, check the gear teeth on the spool for debris.
-
Storage: Always turn the regulator knob to its minimum tension setting when storing the reel for long periods. This prevents the springs from "setting" and losing their elasticity.
-
Avoid Solvent Spills: Never use WD-40 or harsh degreasers on the anodized finish, as it can strip the protective coating or damage the line guard.
Does your Resonate have any specific mechanical grit or "stickiness" in the drag knob that you're currently dealing with?
