The Hardy Hotspur Salmon 10/11 is a robust, large-arbor disc drag reel designed for heavy spey and saltwater use. Because it features a sealed carbon fiber drag system, most "repairs" are actually intensive maintenance or part replacements rather than internal gear fixing.

Pre-Repair Checklist

  • Tools needed: Small flathead screwdriver, 2mm Allen key, waterproof marine grease (like Cal’s), and a clean microfiber cloth.

  • Environment: Work over a tray or a light-colored towel. These reels contain small springs and detent balls that like to disappear into carpets.

1. Disassembly and Inspection

Spool Removal

  1. Rotate the center release cap (on the front of the spool) counter-clockwise.

  2. Lift the spool straight off the spindle.

  3. Check: Inspect the inner rim of the frame and the spool for "rash" (scratches). Burrs here can cause friction; if found, lightly sand with 1000-grit sandpaper.

Drag Knob and Housing

  1. Turn the drag knob to its lowest setting (minimum tension).

  2. Use the Allen key or screwdriver to remove the retaining screw in the center of the drag knob.

  3. Carefully lift the knob. Watch for the clicker plunger and spring underneath; these provide the "click" sound when adjusting drag.

2. Common Repair Scenarios

Issue: Weak or Silent Outgoing Click

The Hotspur uses a spring-and-pawl clicker for the audible drag scream.

  • Fix: Locate the clicker leaf spring inside the frame. If it is flattened, gently bend it back to increase tension. If the plastic pawl is rounded off, it must be replaced with a genuine Hardy part.

Issue: Drag Skipping or "Sticking"

While the drag is sealed, salt or grit can sometimes enter the spindle housing if the O-rings are worn.

  1. Wipe the main spindle clean of all old grease.

  2. Apply a very thin film of synthetic waterproof grease to the spindle.

  3. Note: Do not attempt to open the sealed drag canister. If the internal carbon discs are failing, the entire canister unit usually requires factory replacement.

Issue: Handle Stiffness

  1. Remove the screw on the handle face.

  2. Slide the handle off the post.

  3. Clean the post with isopropyl alcohol.

  4. Apply one drop of light machine oil (not grease) and reassemble.

3. Changing Retrieval Direction

The Hotspur 10/11 is usually set to Left-Hand Wind (LHW) from the factory. To reverse it:

  1. Remove the spool.

  2. Remove the threaded cover on the central spindle (the "Clutch Cover").

  3. Slide out the one-way needle bearing.

  4. Flip the bearing over and slide it back onto the spindle.

  5. Reinstall the cover. Test the drag; it should now resist in the opposite direction.

4. Reassembly and Storage

  1. Align the spool with the spindle and press down firmly until seated.

  2. Tighten the spool release cap until finger-tight.

  3. The Golden Rule: Always back the drag knob off to the "zero" setting when the reel is not in use. This prevents the carbon washers from compressing and taking a "set," which causes jerky drag performance.

Maintenance Schedule

  • After Saltwater: Rinse in lukewarm fresh water for 5 minutes while rotating the spool.

  • Annually: Deep clean the spindle and re-grease the O-rings to maintain the water-tight seal.
