Hardy BOUGLE OLYMPIC GUN METAL
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy Bouglé Olympic Gun Metal edition is a modern classic, celebrated for its 1939-style aesthetics and the iconic "sweet-sounding" Mark II check mechanism. While these reels are built for longevity, their precision-machined parts require specific care to prevent mechanical degradation or finish damage.
## Common Mechanical Issues
1. Weakened or Snapped Check Springs
The most frequent issue with the Bouglé is the loss of "click" tension. This usually happens if the reel is stored for long periods with the drag regulator set to maximum, which keeps the springs under constant tension.
-
The Fix: Replace the internal spring (Spring Steel or Phosphor Bronze). Always store the reel at the minimum tension setting.
-
Part Numbers: Look for Hardy Check Spring (SKU 1332720) or specific Bouglé-sized springs.
2. Worn Click Pawls
If your reel sounds "mushy" or the resistance feels inconsistent during a run, the pawl (the small triangular metal piece that hits the gear) is likely rounded off.
-
The Fix: These reels are designed with a dual-pawl system for easy Left/Right hand conversion. You can often flip to the unused "spare" pawl inside the frame or purchase a Small Click Pawl (SKU 1333869).
3. Spool Wobble (Play)
A slight "clunk" or lateral movement in the spool often indicates a lack of lubrication on the spindle or a loose spool locking screw.
-
The Fix: Remove the spool and apply a high-quality water-repellant grease to the spindle. Ensure the Spool Locking Screw (which is reverse-threaded on some models) is snug. If the spindle is bent, it usually requires professional straightening or replacement.
4. Seized Pillar Screws
The Bouglé features a unique raised pillar design. If grit or saltwater enters the threads of the pillar screws, they can seize, making a full breakdown impossible.
-
The Fix: At least once a season, remove the pillar screws, clean the threads, and apply a tiny amount of anti-seize or reel grease before re-tightening.
## Maintenance & Finish Care
Protecting the Gun Metal Anodization
The "Olympic" Gun Metal finish is a dark anodized coating. While more durable than paint, it can suffer from "rim rash" (scratches on the outer edge) if placed on rocks or gravel.
-
Care Tip: Unlike vintage "leaded" finishes, you should not use harsh abrasives. Wipe down with a soft, lint-free cloth and a drop of light paraffin oil to maintain the luster.
Saltwater Exposure
The Bouglé is primarily a freshwater reel. If used in brackish or salt water, the aluminum and steel components will corrode quickly without immediate care.
-
Protocol: Flush the entire reel (spool removed) under lukewarm running fresh water. Dry thoroughly before placing it back in its sheepskin-lined pouch, as trapped moisture in the wool can cause pitting.
## Repair & Parts Reference Table
| Component | Common Symptom | Action |
| Check Spring | No drag resistance; silent reel | Replace with SKU 1332720 / 1333265 |
| Pawl | Inconsistent "click" sound | Flip to spare pawl or replace |
| Spindle | Gritty rotation; spool wobble | Clean and apply spindle grease |
| Locking Screw | Spool feels loose/unstable | Tighten (Check if reverse-threaded) |
| Handle | Handle is stiff or "sticky" | Flush with cleaner; apply light oil |
Pro Tip: When dismantling the spool, use a properly sized coin or a wide-blade screwdriver for the locking screw. Using a small screwdriver will mar the slot and devalue this collector-grade reel.
