Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601 Special Edition (08-00)
The Ambassadeur 4601 Special Edition (08-00) is a left-hand retrieve collector’s favorite that combines classic round-reel aesthetics with the reliable engineering of the late 90s and early 2000s. Featuring a high-speed retrieve and the signature "01" left-side gear box, this model requires precise lubrication to protect its specialized finish and internal components. For this service, we recommend using Deuthlon Reel Grease for high-torque parts and Deuthlon Reel Oil for high-speed components.
Phase 1: Disassembly and Safety
-
Handle and Star Drag: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap and unscrew the 10mm handle nut. Pull off the handle, the spring washer (curved), and the star drag wheel. Note the orientation of the two Belleville spring washers beneath the star drag; they should be oriented back-to-back () to provide optimal tension.
-
Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate (palm side). Gently pull the side plate away from the frame and slide the spool out.
-
Accessing the Gear Box: Remove the internal screws securing the left side plate (handle side) to the frame pillars. Lift the side plate away to expose the main drive gear, pinion gear, and clutch mechanism.
Phase 2: Gear Train and Drive Lubrication
The Special Edition's gear set is the heart of its performance. Proper grease application ensures a silent, powerful retrieve.
-
Cleaning: Use a degreaser and a small brush to remove all old, contaminated grease from the Main Gear and Pinion Gear. Inspect the teeth for any burrs or excessive wear.
-
Grease Application: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease is engineered to stay on the teeth under the pressure of a heavy retrieve, providing a protective barrier against friction and moisture.
-
Clutch and Linkage: Apply a small dab of grease to the pinion yoke and the metal slide points of the kick lever. This ensures the thumb-bar engagement remains crisp and doesn't stick over time.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System
The levelwind on this model is synchronized, meaning it tracks back and forth during both the retrieve and the cast. Any friction here will drastically reduce your casting distance.
-
Worm Shaft Service: Unscrew the pawl cap on the bottom of the line guide and remove the metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out of the frame. Clean the spiral grooves and the interior of the worm shaft shroud.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the nylon idler gear on the frame that links the spool to the worm shaft. Ensure the teeth are free of grit.
-
Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil here instead of grease is essential. Grease can become sluggish and trap debris, while Deuthlon oil maintains a low-friction film that allows the levelwind to oscillate rapidly during a cast with zero resistance.
Phase 4: Bearings and Spool
-
Spool Bearings: Locate the two stainless steel spool bearings—one in the side plate tension knob and one in the opposite side plate.
-
Lubrication: Clean the bearings thoroughly. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing race. This oil provides the high-speed lubrication necessary for long-distance casting while protecting the bearings from corrosion.
-
Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR): Inspect the one-way roller bearing in the side plate. If the reel is slipping, clean the IAR bearing with alcohol and apply a very light film of oil. Never use grease in the IAR bearing, as it will cause the rollers to stick.
Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing
-
Rebuild the Drive: Place the pinion gear and yoke back into position. Slide the main gear and drag washer stack onto the drive shaft.
-
Secure the Frame: Reattach the left side plate to the frame and tighten the screws.
-
Install the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the spindle engages the pinion gear. Reattach the right side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Final Assembly: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and 10mm nut. Secure the locking cap.
Final Function Check
Depress the thumb bar to ensure the spool releases freely. Spin the spool by hand; the line guide should track smoothly across the frame. Turn the handle to verify that the gears engage instantly. By using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the heavy gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you have optimized your Ambassadeur 4601 Special Edition for maximum performance and long-term durability.
