Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4600PLUS (84-1)
The Ambassadeur 4600PLUS (84-1) is a vintage masterpiece from the mid-1980s, representing a transitional era in Abu Garcia's engineering. Unlike the standard 4600C, the "PLUS" series often featured unique aesthetics and a distinct internal configuration. This right-hand retrieve reel requires specific care to maintain its aging components and ensure it continues to perform with modern efficiency. To preserve the integrity of this classic, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.
Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking plate. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Lift off the handle, the tension spring washer, and the star drag wheel.
-
Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate (handle side). Pull the side plate away from the frame.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the spool shaft for any signs of pitting or old, dried lubricant.
Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Maintenance
The gear set in the 84-1 model is the primary source of the reel's cranking power. Given its age, preventing metal-on-metal friction is vital.
-
Cleaning the Internals: Remove the screws securing the right side plate to the frame. Lift the plate to expose the main gear and pinion assembly. Use a degreaser and a soft brush to remove decades of potential buildup.
-
Grease Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease is specifically designed to provide a high-load film that stays on the gear teeth even during high-pressure retrieves. It also provides a critical barrier against moisture for these vintage metal parts.
-
Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount of grease to the yoke and the kick lever assembly to ensure the thumb-bar engagement is smooth and responsive.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System
The synchronized levelwind on the 4600PLUS must move freely during the cast. Any resistance here will result in shortened casting distance and potential backlash.
-
Worm Shaft Service: Unscrew the pawl cap on the bottom of the line guide. Remove the metal pawl and inspect it for a "hooked" or worn tip. Slide the worm shaft out of the frame shroud and clean the grooves thoroughly.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the nylon idler gear that connects the spool’s rotation to the levelwind. Inspect the teeth for brittleness, which can occur in vintage reels.
-
Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil instead of grease on these components is essential for vintage Ambassadeurs. The light viscosity of Deuthlon oil ensures that the levelwind and idler gears do not create mechanical drag, allowing the spool to spin at its maximum potential during the cast.
Phase 4: Bearings and Spindle
-
Spool Bearings: Locate the bearings in the side plates or on the spool shaft.
-
Lubrication: Clean the bearings of any old, thickened oil. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing race. This oil is formulated to maintain performance across a wide temperature range, ensuring the reel remains smooth in all conditions.
-
Mechanical Tension: Wipe the ends of the spool spindle clean and apply a micro-drop of oil to the contact points inside the tension knobs.
Phase 5: Reassembly and Function Check
-
Set the Gear Box: Reseat the pinion gear into the yoke and slide the main gear and drag stack onto the drive shaft.
-
Frame Assembly: Reattach the side plate to the frame and tighten the screws.
-
Insert Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Attach the side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Final Components: Reinstall the star drag, spring washer, and handle. Secure the 10mm nut and locking plate.
Final Performance Verification
Engage the thumb bar to ensure the spool enters free-spool mode. Spin the spool by hand; the levelwind should track back and forth silently and without hesitation. Turn the handle to engage the gears. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the heavy-duty gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler system ensures your Ambassadeur 4600PLUS (84-1) remains a high-performing piece of fishing history.
