Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4600KC3 (08-01)

The Ambassadeur 4600KC3 is a right-hand retrieve round reel featuring the high-speed C3 drive system and the "Gunsmoke" or "Black" finish often associated with the K-series. This 08-01 revision utilizes a three-bearing system and a synchronized levelwind. To maintain the smooth, powerful retrieve and maximize casting distance, this guide recommends the use of Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.

Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly

  1. Handle and Star Drag: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Pull the handle arm off the drive shaft, followed by the curved spring washer and the star drag wheel. Note the orientation of the two Belleville spring washers beneath the star wheel; they must be reinstalled back-to-back () to maintain consistent drag pressure.

  2. Side Plate Access: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate (handle side). Remove the plate to expose the main gear assembly.

  3. Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the spool shaft for any debris or old, thickened lubricant.

Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Maintenance

The 4600KC3 drive train is built for speed and durability. Proper grease application here prevents metal fatigue and ensures a quiet retrieve.

  1. Cleaning: Use a degreaser and a small brush to remove all old grease from the gear teeth. Ensure the drive shaft and the teeth of the pinion gear are completely clean.

  2. Grease Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease is specifically formulated to withstand the high-torque loads of the 5.3:1 or 6.3:1 gear ratios found in the C3 series. It provides a long-lasting, waterproof barrier that protects the brass and steel interface.

  3. Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount of grease to the pinion yoke and the contact points of the kick lever to ensure the thumb-bar engagement remains crisp and responsive.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System

On the Ambassadeur C3, the levelwind moves during the cast. Reducing friction in this system is the most effective way to prevent backlashes and increase distance.

  1. Worm Shaft Service: Unscrew the pawl cap on the bottom of the line guide and remove the metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out of the frame shroud. Clean the "double-helix" grooves thoroughly.

  2. Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the nylon idler gear that connects the spool to the levelwind system. Check for any dirt trapped in the teeth.

  3. Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil instead of grease on these components is critical. Grease is too viscous and creates mechanical drag, whereas Deuthlon oil allows the levelwind and idler gears to spin with minimal resistance, ensuring the spool can reach its maximum RPM during a cast.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Spindle

  1. Spool Bearings: Locate the two stainless steel spool bearings—one in the side plate tension knob and one in the opposite side plate.

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings of any old oil. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing race. This oil provides the necessary high-speed lubrication for effortless casting while protecting against corrosion.

  3. Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR): Inspect the one-way roller bearing in the side plate. If the handle has back-play, clean the IAR bearing with alcohol and apply a very light film of oil. Do not grease this bearing.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Set the Gear Box: Reseat the pinion gear into the yoke and slide the main gear and drag stack onto the drive shaft.

  2. Close the Frame: Reattach the side plate to the frame and tighten the thumb screws.

  3. Insert Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the centrifugal brake weights are retracted.

  4. Final Components: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and 10mm nut. Secure the locking cap.

Performance Verification

Depress the thumb bar to verify the reel enters free-spool mode. Spin the spool by hand; the line guide should track smoothly across the frame. Turn the handle to engage the gears. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the heavy-duty gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears ensures your Ambassadeur 4600KC3 (08-01) remains a high-performing tool.
