Product Description
Shimano 10HEA Click Pin (RD8999)
The Shimano 10HEA Click Pin (RD8999) is a small, precision-machined metal pin found within the drag system of Shimano spinning reels. It is the primary component responsible for the audible "click" sound you hear when the spool rotates while a fish is pulling line against the drag.
This pin is spring-loaded and sits inside the Click Housing on the underside of the spool. As the spool turns, the tip of the pin strikes the teeth of the Drag Clicker Gear (located on the main shaft). Because it is a constant friction point, the tip of the pin can eventually wear down or flatten, causing the reel to become "silent" or have a weak, inconsistent drag sound.

Compatibility & Fitment
The 10HEA (RD8999) is a "Legacy Standard" part used in hundreds of Shimano spinning reel models from the late 1990s through the mid-2010s. It is a direct factory fit for:
-
Shimano Stradic Series: ST-1000FH, 2500FH, 4000FH, 1000FI, 2500FI, 3000FI, 4000FI
-
Shimano Sustains Series: SU-1000FD, 2500FD, 4000FD, 5000FD
-
Shimano Stella Series: Fits various "FA" and "FB" generation models.
-
Shimano Twin Power: Select Japanese and Export variants.
-
Shimano Saragosa Series: Fits select smaller frames (e.g., 3000F, 4000F).
-
Shimano Spheros: Select "FB" and "FA" models.
Signs of Failure
-
The "Silent" Drag: You are fighting a fish, the line is peeling off, but there is no sound.
-
Weak Clicking: The sound is very quiet or intermittent, often caused by the pin's tip becoming rounded.
-
Grittiness: If the pin is bent or corroded, it can create a "catchy" feeling in the drag as it struggles to skip over the gear teeth.
Maintenance & Installation Tips
-
Don't Lose the Spring: The 10HEA pin is held in place by the Click Spring (RD9000). When you remove the retaining plate, the spring can launch the pin across the room. Work inside a clear plastic bag to catch any flying parts.
-
Orientation: The pin usually has a specific orientation (a "head" and a "tail"). Ensure the pointed or beveled end is facing outward toward the gear teeth.
-
Lubrication: Use a tiny amount of Shimano Permalube or a light water-resistant grease. Do not use heavy grease, as it will "muffle" the sound of the clicker.
-
Check the Gear: If the pin is fine but there is still no sound, check the Drag Clicker Gear on the main shaft. If the teeth on that gear are flattened, a new pin will not help.
Pro Tip: If your reel is "Legacy" (older than 10 years), this part is frequently out of stock at major retailers. It is wise to buy 2 or 3 at a time if you find them, as they are easily lost during cleaning. You can view the full assembly schematic at www.reelschematic.com.
