Product Description
SHIMANO 109H9 CLUTCH PAWL SPRING RETAINER (BNT1227)
Small Part, Critical Security
The Shimano 109H9 Clutch Pawl Spring Retainer (Part No. BNT1227) is a specialized plastic or composite clip used to anchor the clutch pawl spring within the reel's internal linkage. Its primary job is to hold the high-tension spring in its specific orientation so that it can exert constant pressure on the clutch pawl.
Without this retainer, the spring can slip out of position or fly off its mounting post, causing the clutch (thumb bar) to fail. If your thumb bar doesn't pop back up when you turn the handle, or if it feels "dead" with no spring tension, this retainer may have cracked or popped off during a previous service.

Installation Tip:
-
The "Pop": This part is small and can be difficult to handle. Use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers to seat it. You will often feel or hear a slight "click" when it is fully seated on the post.
-
Spring Tension: Ensure the Clutch Pawl Spring (BNT1206) is correctly hooked into the pawl before you snap this retainer over the top. If the spring isn't seated in its groove, the retainer will be under uneven pressure and may crack.
-
Inspection: Check for stress whitening (white marks in the black plastic). If you see these, the retainer is about to fail and should be replaced before it snaps and leaves you stranded on the water.
