Ion 59300 ION ALPHA PLUS 10 SERIES 041457 2022
Loading Schematic Pages...
The ION Alpha Plus 10-inch Series (Model 59300) is a high-performance 40V electric ice auger. While these machines are generally more reliable than their gas-powered ancestors, the harsh conditions of ice fishing can lead to mechanical or electrical fatigue.
This guide covers troubleshooting and common repairs for the 2022 production series.
Safety First
Before performing any maintenance or repair:
-
Remove the battery. Never work on the unit with the power source connected.
-
Keep the blade guard on whenever you are not working directly on the blades.
-
Wear heavy-duty gloves. The ION blades are razor-sharp even when "dull."
Troubleshooting Essentials
| Symptom | Potential Cause | Solution |
| Motor won't start | Battery not seated | Push battery until it clicks firmly. |
| Motor won't start | Thermal protection tripped | Let the unit warm up or cool down (if overworked). |
| Auger turns but won't cut | Dull or damaged blades | Replace or sharpen blades. |
| Grinding noise | Gearbox debris/failure | Inspect planetary gears for metal shavings. |
| Intermittent power | Trigger switch failure | Clean contacts or replace handle assembly. |
Blade Maintenance and Replacement
The 10-inch Alpha Plus uses a specific blade centering ring and dual flat blades. If the auger is "skating" on the ice without biting, your blades are likely the culprit.
Removal
-
Stabilize the auger so it cannot roll.
-
Use a 10mm wrench or socket to remove the mounting bolts on each blade.
-
Carefully pull the blades away from the mounting plate.
Installation
-
Clean the mounting surface of any ice or rust.
-
Align the new blades. Note that the beveled edge must face the ice.
-
Hand-tighten the bolts first to ensure they aren't cross-threaded.
-
Tighten firmly with the wrench, but do not over-torque, as the mounting plate is aluminum.
Battery and Terminal Care
The 2022 ION series relies on the XC5 5Ah battery. Electrical issues are often caused by poor contact rather than a "dead" motor.
-
Clean Terminals: Use a dry cloth or electronic contact cleaner to wipe the copper terminals on both the battery and the auger head.
-
Check for Moisture: If water gets into the battery port and freezes, it can prevent the battery from seating. Use a hair dryer on a low setting to dry the port if moisture is detected.
-
Storage: Never store the battery in freezing temperatures when not in use. Keep it in a secondary insulated bag or inside your jacket to maintain cell voltage.
Handle and Trigger Assembly
If the motor is silent despite a fresh battery, the trigger switch or the wiring inside the handle may be disconnected.
-
Remove the Phillips head screws securing the handle casing.
-
Gently split the handle halves. Be careful not to lose the trigger spring.
-
Check for pinched wires or loose spade connectors leading to the trigger switch.
-
Cleaning: Use compressed air to blow out any "ice dust" or debris that may be jamming the safety lockout mechanism.
Transmission and Gearbox
The Alpha Plus features a planetary gear system. This is a sealed unit, but if you hear a high-pitched whine or feel excessive vibration:
-
Check the Allen Bolt: Ensure the bolt connecting the auger flighting to the powerhead output shaft is tight. A loose flighting can cause "wobble" that mimics a broken gear.
-
Greasing: While ION units are "lubriced for life," extreme users may choose to open the gearcase to apply a low-temperature synthetic grease (like Mag 1 or similar). Only do this if the unit is out of warranty, as opening the motor housing will void it.
Preventative Maintenance for Off-Season
-
Spray the Flighting: Apply a light coat of silicone spray or WD-40 to the steel flighting to prevent surface rust.
-
Battery Level: Store the battery at roughly 50% to 70% charge. Do not store it completely empty or 100% full for several months.
-
Check the Centering Point: Ensure the threaded centering point at the bottom of the auger is tight. If this falls off, the auger will be nearly impossible to start in a hole.
Note: If the motor emits a burning smell or smoke, the internal controller has likely failed. These are integrated units and usually require a full powerhead replacement rather than a component-level repair.
