The Wally Marshall Signature Series spinning reels are legendary in the crappie and panfish world for their lightweight design and specific gear ratios. However, like any precision tool used in wet environments, they require periodic maintenance to prevent "gear crunch," handle stiffness, or anti-reverse failure.

This guide covers the "Old Style" models, characterized by their classic frame design and reliable mechanical internals.

Phase 1: Essential Tools & Preparation

Before opening the side plate, ensure you have a clean, well-lit workspace. Using a white towel as a work surface prevents small tension springs and shims from bouncing onto the floor.

• Screwdrivers: A small Phillips head (#0 or #1) and a flathead.

• Wrench: A 10mm socket or thin-walled wrench for the rotor nut.

• Cleaning Agent: Isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel cleaner.

• Lubricants: High-quality synthetic reel grease (for gears) and light oil (for bearings).

• Tweezers: Essential for seating the trip lever and anti-reverse springs.

Phase 2: Exterior Disassembly

1. Remove the Spool: Unscrew the top drag knob. Lift the spool assembly off the main shaft. Take note of any thin plastic shims (clicker washers) on the shaft; these control line lay.

2. Handle Removal: Unscrew the handle cap on the opposite side of the body and pull the handle through.

3. Rotor Removal: * Remove the small set-screw locking the rotor nut.

   • Use your wrench to remove the 10mm rotor nut. Note: Most Lew's models use a standard right-hand thread here, but check for "L" markings indicating a reverse thread.

   • Slide the rotor off to expose the pinion gear and anti-reverse assembly.

Phase 3: The Internal Mechanics

1. Opening the Body: Remove the three or four screws holding the side plate. Carefully lift the plate straight up.

2. The Drive Train: * Lift out the Main Gear. Be careful not to lose the thin brass shims on the gear's axle; these are tuned to the specific tolerances of your reel.

   • To remove the Main Shaft, you must first unscrew the small screw connecting the shaft to the Oscillation Slider.

   • Slide the shaft out through the top of the reel.

3. Cleaning: Submerge the metal gears in alcohol to strip old, gummy grease. Use a cotton swab to clean the gear tracks inside the graphite body.

Phase 4: Common Repairs & Troubleshooting

Sticky Drag Performance

If the drag is jerky, remove the retaining clip inside the spool. Pull out the felt and stainless steel washers. If the felt is dry or blackened, clean it and apply a light coat of dedicated drag grease. Do not use standard gear grease, as it will cause the drag to "stick-slip."

Anti-Reverse Failure (The "Back-Spin" Issue)

If the handle spins backward in cold weather, the one-way clutch bearing is likely contaminated.

• The Fix: Remove the bearing sleeve from the pinion gear. Clean the roller bearing with alcohol. Never grease this bearing. Apply one single drop of very light oil. Excess oil or grease will cause the rollers to lose grip.

Grinding Noise

Usually caused by a worn pinion bearing or a lack of grease on the oscillation gear. Inspect the teeth of the main gear for pitting. If the teeth are clean, a liberal application of synthetic grease to the gear contact points will usually silence the reel.

Phase 5: Reassembly Pro-Tips

• Grease vs. Oil: Use grease on the main gear, pinion gear, and oscillation slider. Use oil on the ball bearings and the line roller assembly on the bail.

• The Oscillation Gear: Ensure the "pin" on the oscillation gear is properly seated in the slot of the slider before closing the side plate.

• Testing: Before tightening the side plate screws fully, turn the main gear by hand to ensure no binding is occurring.

Maintenance Schedule

• Every 5 trips: Apply one drop of oil to the line roller and the handle pivot points.

• Once per season: Full teardown, degrease, and fresh lubrication.

• Saltwater use: If used in brackish water, this reel must be rinsed with a light freshwater mist after every use, as the "Old Style" WSP series is not fully sealed.
