Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s Custom Speed Spool (2nd Gen) CU1SHL

The 2nd Generation Lew’s Custom (CU1SHL) is the "workhorse" of the professional lineup. This specific model (Left-Handed, 7.5:1 Gear Ratio) features a one-piece aluminum frame and the Multi-Setting Brake (MSB) system.

The 2nd Gen model improved the ergonomics and the gear support system (P2 Super Pinion), making it smoother but requiring more precise alignment during reassembly than the original series.

Phase 1: Left-Hand Disassembly

  1. Handle Components: Remove the retainer screw. Use a 10mm driver for the handle nut.

    • Warning: As a left-hand model (L), the nut is Clockwise-threaded. Turn it Clockwise to loosen.

  2. Star Drag & Tension: Remove the star drag. Take care not to lose the Clicker Pin and Spring located inside the star's housing.

  3. Spool Removal: Use the side plate release lever. On the CU1 series, the side plate is tethered or fully removable depending on the specific production run. Slide out the U-shape anodized aluminum spool.

Phase 2: Servicing the Multi-Setting Brake (MSB)

The CU1SHL uses a "Best of Both Worlds" braking system:

  • The Magnetic Dial: This controls the magnetic bank in the side plate. Wipe the magnets with a dry cloth to remove any metallic dust.

  • Centrifugal Tabs: On the spool side, you will see the white centrifugal tabs. They should click "out" (engaged) and "in" (disengaged) with a crisp snap.

  • The Brake Hub: Clean the brass ring inside the side plate with alcohol. On the Custom series, keeping this ring bone-dry is the secret to maximum casting distance, while a micro-film of oil is better for silent, controlled casting.

Phase 3: Gear Box & P2 Super Pinion

  1. Opening the Housing: Remove the three screws from the gear-side plate. Note that the screw located near the thumb-bar is often a different length.

  2. The Main Gear: The CU1SHL features a High-Strength Solid Brass Main Gear. Brass is incredibly durable but can become "heavy" feeling if old grease accumulates.

    • Cleaning: Strip all old grease using a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol.

    • Greasing: Apply synthetic grease to the teeth. Do not grease the face of the gear where the drag washers sit.

  3. P2 Pinion Support: This model utilizes a bearing-supported pinion gear. This ensures that the pinion and main gear stay in perfect alignment even when you are winching in a fish. Check the bearing inside the "yoke" (the plastic bracket holding the small gear); it should spin without resistance.

Phase 4: Lubrication Points

  • Drag Washers (Carbon Fiber): The Custom series uses high-grade carbon fiber. You can run these dry for a "stronger" drag or with an incredibly thin layer of carbon drag grease for a "smoother" startup.

  • Spool Bearings: These are high-speed stainless steel. Use one drop of thin oil.

  • Worm Gear (Level Wind): Use a light oil or very thin grease. Because the CU1SHL is a high-speed reel (7.5:1), the level wind moves rapidly. Heavy grease will create drag and shorten your casts.

  • One-Way Clutch (Anti-Reverse): This is the large bearing in the side plate. Do not grease. A single drop of oil is all it needs to prevent corrosion.

CU1SHL Troubleshooting

Symptom Probable Cause Action
Handle back-slaps Oiled Anti-Reverse Clean the bearing with alcohol; leave dry or 1 drop oil.
Whirring on cast Dry Spool Bearing Oil the bearing behind the tension knob.
Thumb bar won't pop up Weak Yoke Springs Ensure the two coil springs on the pinion posts are not compressed.
Grinding feel Gear Contamination Deep clean the brass main gear teeth; re-grease.

Pro Reassembly Tip

When putting the side plate back on, ensure the Clutch Link (the metal slider) is aligned with the thumb-bar. If the plate doesn't snap into place with light pressure, do not force it. Rotate the handle slightly to allow the P2 pinion gear to mesh with the main gear, and the plate should slide on easily.
