Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s Custom Inshore Speed Spool (CI1SH)

The Lew’s Custom Inshore (CI1SH) is engineered specifically for the harsh, corrosive environments of salt and brackish water. While it shares some DNA with the freshwater Custom series, it features a unique drainage port system, a sealed carbon fiber drag, and a specialized MSB (Multi-Setting Brake). Because this reel is often exposed to salt spray, the maintenance routine must be more aggressive to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Step 1: External Teardown (Right-Handed)

  1. Handle & Nut: Remove the retainer screw and the 10mm nut (Counter-Clockwise to loosen).

  2. Star Drag: Spin off the star. The CI1SH features a heavy-duty drag stack; ensure the spring washers (Belleville washers) are kept in the () orientation to maintain consistent pressure.

  3. The Drainage Ports: Before opening the reel, check the small weep holes at the bottom of the frame. Ensure these are not clogged with dried salt or sand. Use a needle to clear them if necessary.

Step 2: Servicing the Salt-Ready Internals

  1. Opening the Gear Side: Remove the three side plate screws. Note that the Inshore model uses passivated stainless steel screws to resist rust—do not replace them with standard freshwater screws.

  2. Main Gear & Drag: The CI1SH uses a High-Strength Solid Brass Main Gear.

    • The Drag: This reel utilizes a multi-disk carbon fiber drag system.

    • Inshore Tip: Because salt can crystallize on the edges of the washers, it is highly recommended to apply a very light coat of Cal’s Universal Grease (or a similar salt-safe drag grease) to the carbon washers. This creates a barrier against saltwater intrusion.

  3. The P2 Super Pinion: Like the Custom Pro, the Inshore has a bearing-supported pinion. Inspect this bearing closely; it is the most common point of failure if saltwater sits in the reel after a trip.

Step 3: The Multi-Setting Brake (MSB)

The CI1SH combines centrifugal and magnetic braking to handle the wind resistance of inshore lures (like popping corks or paddletails).

  • Magnetic Side: Wipe the magnets in the palm side plate. Salt film can build up here and interfere with the magnetic field.

  • Centrifugal Side: Clean the internal brass friction ring. If it has any green oxidation (verdigris), use a very fine abrasive or a vinegar-soaked swab to clean it, then neutralize with alcohol and apply a micro-film of oil.

Step 4: Lubrication for Extreme Environments

  • Corrosion Protection: Apply a light film of grease to the entire interior of the aluminum frame before reassembling. This acts as a secondary "skin" against salt.

  • Bearings: The CI1SH uses 3 double-shielded stainless steel bearings in key locations. Use a high-viscosity reel oil; while thin oil is faster, a slightly thicker oil provides better protection against salt intrusion.

  • Worm Gear: This is the most exposed part of the reel. Use a salt-resistant grease or a heavy oil. If the level wind fails, it is usually because the Pawl has been corroded by saltwater trapped in the worm gear track.

CI1SH Troubleshooting & Specifications

Component Maintenance Action
Main Gear Heavy coat of synthetic grease (to fight moisture).
Drag Washers Carbon Fiber; use light drag grease.
Brake Ring Clean and check for oxidation/green buildup.
Drainage Ports Ensure clear of salt/sand.

Pro Tips for Inshore Longevity:

  • The "Freshwater Flush": After every trip, tighten the drag completely (to seal the washers) and rinse the reel with a gentle mist of freshwater. Never use high pressure, as it forces salt deeper into the gears.

  • Zero-Reverse Bearing: If the handle slips during a hookset, salt has likely entered the one-way clutch. Flush it with a degreaser, then apply a single drop of corrosion-inhibiting oil.

  • Storage: Always back off the drag tension when the reel is not in use to prevent the carbon washers from becoming compressed and "sticky."
