Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s Custom Speed Spool (2nd Gen) CU1H, CU1SH, CU1XH

The 2nd Generation Lew’s Custom (Right-Handed) is a high-performance baitcaster built on the Super Low Profile (SLP) frame. These reels feature Hard Anodized Aluminum Speed Gears®, a P2 Super Pinion™, and a robust 20 lb. Carbon Fiber Drag.

 

 

Whether you have the CU1H (6.2:1), CU1SH (7.5:1), or CU1XH (8.3:1), the maintenance steps are identical. These reels are designed for heavy freshwater use; keeping the aluminum gears clean is the key to longevity.


Step 1: External Disassembly

  1. Handle & Nut: Remove the retainer screw and the 10mm handle nut (Counter-Clockwise to loosen). Remove the 95mm bowed handle.

  2. Star Drag & Speed Dial: Spin off the star drag. The Speed Dial® line indicator is integrated into the tension knob—unscrew the knob and keep the internal shim and bearing safe.

  3. Spool & Side Plate: Pull the side plate release pin and rotate the palm-side plate. Slide out the spool. Clean the Speed Keeper® hook keeper area of any trapped dirt or lure scales.


Step 2: The Multi-Setting Brake (MSB) System

The 2nd Gen Custom uses a dual-braking system that is frequently the source of "casting noise" if neglected.

  • Magnetic (External): Wipe the magnets inside the palm-side plate with a dry cloth.

  • Centrifugal (Internal): Locate the 4 centrifugal brake shoes on the spool.

    • Action: These shoes must slide freely. If they are gummy, clean them with alcohol.

    • The Friction Ring: Wipe the polished brass ring inside the side plate. Apply the absolute smallest amount of oil to a swab and run it around this ring to keep the brakes silent.


Step 3: Gear Housing & P2 Super Pinion

  1. Opening: Remove the three side plate screws. Note that the 2nd Gen uses an aluminum frame, so do not over-tighten these screws upon reassembly to avoid stripping the threads.

     

     

  2. Hard Anodized Gears: These gears are CNC-cut on Hamai machines. Aluminum gears are incredibly light but require clean lubrication. If the grease looks black or grey, it is contaminated with metal wear and must be replaced.

     

     

    • Degreasing: Use a toothbrush and alcohol to strip the gears to bare metal.

    • Greasing: Apply a thin, consistent layer of synthetic grease to the main gear.

  3. P2 Super Pinion: The pinion is supported by a bearing to maintain alignment. Ensure this bearing is flushed and oiled. If the reel feels "stiff" while reeling, this bearing is usually the first place to check.

     

     


Step 4: Lubrication Strategy

  • Drag Washers: The 2nd Gen Custom uses heavy-duty Carbon Fiber washers providing 20 lbs of drag. For the smoothest performance, apply a paper-thin film of carbon-specific drag grease.

     

     

  • Spool Bearings: These are double-shielded stainless steel. Use one drop of thin high-speed oil.

     

     

  • Worm Gear: Use a light oil. Because the level wind on the 8.3:1 (XH) model moves at extremely high speeds, heavy grease will cause the reel to feel sluggish.


Troubleshooting & Technical Specs

Common 2nd Gen Issues:

  • Gritty Feeling: Aluminum gears are sensitive. If you feel "grit," a single grain of sand is likely trapped in the Hamai-cut teeth. A deep clean is the only fix.

  • Handle "Back-Play": The Zero-Reverse clutch bearing in the side plate is likely over-lubricated. Flush it with a degreaser and leave it dry.

  • Erratic Casting: Check that the centrifugal shoes aren't stuck. If one is "out" and the other three are "in," the spool will be unbalanced and vibrate.

Pro Tip: When reassembling, ensure the Recessed Brake Dial on the side plate is seated correctly before tightening the screws, or you may pinch the internal magnetic adjustment arm.
