Repair & Maintenance Guide: Lew’s Classic Pro Speed Spool (CP1SH)
The Lew’s Classic Pro Speed Spool (CP1SH) is a highly popular, budget-friendly workhorse in the SLP (Super Low Profile) family. While it shares the streamlined look of higher-end models, it utilizes a one-piece graphite frame and Rulon drag washers. Because it lacks the aluminum frame of the Custom series, it is lighter but requires careful handling during disassembly to avoid over-torquing screws in the composite housing.
Phase 1: External Teardown (Right-Handed)
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the retainer screw and the 10mm handle nut (Counter-Clockwise to loosen). Remove the 95mm aluminum handle and the star drag.
-
Star Drag Components: Keep track of the Clicker Assembly (Key #73-77). Beneath the star, you will find two bowed Belleville Washers. To maintain proper drag tension, ensure they are reinstalled facing each other
(). -
Spool Access: Locate the three drain ports on the sideplate—these are excellent for rinsing but do not replace a full teardown. Rotate the palm-side plate and slide out the 32mm Anodized Aluminum U-spool.
Phase 2: Interior Cleaning & Brass Gears
-
Opening the Gear Box: Remove the three side plate screws.
-
Note: Unlike aluminum reels, the graphite threads on the CP1SH can strip easily. Use a hand screwdriver only—never a power tool.
-
-
High-Strength Brass Gears: The CP1SH features solid brass Speed Gears™ cut on Hamai CNC machines.
-
Maintenance: Brass is heavy and durable but collects "black gunk" faster than aluminum. Scrub the teeth with a toothbrush and alcohol until they shine like new gold.
-
-
Rulon Drag System: This reel uses Rulon washers (Key #42-45).
-
Action: Wipe these clean with a dry cloth. Rulon is a self-lubricating material; it performs best when dry and clean. Adding grease here will actually lower the 15-lb max drag rating.
-
Phase 3: The Magnetic Control System (MCS)
The Classic Pro uses an Externally Adjustable Magnetic Control System.
-
The Magnets: The palm-side plate houses a bank of magnets. Ensure there is no moisture or grit between the magnets, as this will cause "pulsing" resistance during a cast.
-
Spool Surface: Wipe the flat outer rim of the aluminum spool. This is where the magnets create their braking force. Any oil on this surface will cause the brakes to slip, leading to backlashes.
Phase 4: Lubrication for the 4+1 Bearing System
-
Bearings: The CP1SH has 4 double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings. Place one drop of thin oil on the spool bearings (one behind the tension knob, one in the palm plate).
-
Worm Gear (Level Wind): Clean the Zirconia line guide and the worm gear. Apply a very light coat of grease to the worm gear spirals. If you fish in dirty water, use oil instead, as it won't trap as much silt.
-
Zero-Reverse Clutch: The one-way clutch bearing (Key #53) is the "heart" of the anti-reverse. Do not grease. A single drop of thin oil is the most it should ever receive to stay silent and functional.
CP1SH Troubleshooting & Specifications
| Feature | Specification | Maintenance Note |
| Gear Ratio | 7.5:1 (High Speed) | Check pinion gear for wear on high-speed retrieves. |
| Max Drag | 15 lbs (Rulon) | Keep washers dry; do not grease. |
| Frame | One-piece Graphite | Do not over-tighten side plate screws. |
| Gears | Solid Brass | Deep clean once a season to remove oxidation. |
Common Issues:
-
"Crunchy" Retrieve: Usually salt or sand trapped in the brass main gear. A simple re-grease won't fix it; you must strip the old grease entirely.
-
Backlash Even on High Brake: The spool surface is likely oily. Wipe the spool rim and the magnets with 90% isopropyl alcohol.
-
Thumb Bar Sticks: This is common in the Classic Pro if the Clutch Cam (Key #33) gets dry. Apply a dab of grease to the plastic sliding tracks inside the frame.
Pro Tip: Because the CP1SH has a graphite frame, it is very susceptible to "flex" under extreme loads. If you are winching in heavy fish, ensure your Handle Nut is always tight; if it's loose, the brass drive shaft can slightly round out the hole in the aluminum handle over time.
