Hardy UD LA Series
Loading Schematic Pages...
The Hardy UD LA (Ultra-D Large Arbour) series is a precision-engineered piece of equipment known for its lightweight design and smooth disc drag. While these reels are built to last, regular maintenance and occasional part replacement are necessary to keep the performance "Hardy-smooth."
Required Tools and Materials
-
Isopropyl Alcohol (90% or higher): For removing old, Gunked-up grease.
-
Cotton Swabs and a Lint-Free Cloth: For precision cleaning.
-
Synthetic Reel Grease: Specifically for the gears and spindle.
-
Reel Oil: A light machine oil for the handle and small moving parts.
-
Small Flathead Screwdriver: For the spindle screw (if applicable to your specific model year).
Section 1: Disassembly
Before starting, ensure you are working over a light-colored towel. This prevents small springs or bearings from bouncing off the table and disappearing into the void.
-
Remove the Spool: Turn the central locking nut (or press the release lever, depending on the specific UD LA generation) and pull the spool straight off the frame.
-
Access the Drag Housing: On the UD LA, the drag system is housed within the hub of the frame. Remove the retaining screw located in the center of the spindle.
-
Remove the Drive Gear: Carefully lift the drive gear and the one-way bearing assembly out of the frame.
Section 2: Cleaning and Lubrication
The most common "repair" for a UD LA is simply removing salt, grit, or dried factory grease that has become abrasive.
-
Degreasing: Submerge the metal components (not the drag washers) in isopropyl alcohol. Use a cotton swab to scrub the teeth of the drive gear.
-
The Spindle: Wipe the spindle down until it is "surgical" clean. Any grit here will cause the reel to feel "gritty" during the retrieve.
-
Lubrication Points:
-
Spindle: Apply a very thin film of synthetic grease.
-
Main Gear: Apply grease to the teeth, but do not over-apply. Excess grease attracts dirt.
-
Handle: Place one drop of light oil at the base of the handle knob.
-
Section 3: Drag System Maintenance
The UD LA utilizes a disc drag. If your drag is "stuttering," it is likely due to moisture or oil contamination on the friction surfaces.
-
Inspect the Washers: If the washers are carbon-fiber, they should generally be kept clean and dry. If they appear glazed (shiny and hard), light scuffing with very fine sandpaper (1000+ grit) can restore friction.
-
The One-Way Bearing: This is the heart of the "silent" or "click" retrieve. If the reel is slipping in both directions, the bearing is likely fouled. Clean it with alcohol and apply a single drop of very thin oil. Do not use heavy grease here, or the bearing may fail to engage.
Section 4: Retrieve Conversion (LHW to RHW)
If you need to change the direction of the wind, follow these steps:
| Step | Action |
| 1 | Remove the spool and the spindle retaining screw. |
| 2 | Lift out the one-way bearing (usually housed in a hexagonal or circular sleeve). |
| 3 | Flip the bearing over (180 degrees) and reinsert it into the housing. |
| 4 | Reassemble and test the drag engagement. The drag should now resist in the opposite direction. |
Section 5: Troubleshooting Common Issues
The Reel "Screams" or Squeaks:
This is usually a dry spindle or a dry handle. Apply a microscopic amount of grease to the spindle and oil to the handle pin.
The Drag is Inconsistent:
Check for "flat spots" on the drag washers. If the washers are compressed or warped, they must be replaced. Ensure the drag knob spring hasn't lost its tension; if it has, you can gently stretch it back to its original length, though replacement is preferred.
The Spool Wobbles:
Check the spindle screw. If it is tight and the wobble persists, check for a worn spindle bushing. Hardy reels have tight tolerances; even a fraction of a millimeter of wear can cause a noticeable "knock."
Reassembly Note
When putting the spool back on, ensure the drive dogs are properly aligned with the gear. Never force the spool down. If it doesn't click into place with light pressure, rotate it slightly until the teeth align. Give the drag knob a full cycle from "Min" to "Max" to ensure the pressure plate is seated correctly before heading back to the water.
