The Hardy MTX and MTX-S series are high-performance fly reels featuring a hybrid carbon fiber and alloy main frame. Because of their disc drag system and lightweight construction, they require specific care to maintain their smooth performance.

Essential Tools and Preparation

Before starting, ensure you have a clean, lint-free workspace.

  • Small flat-head screwdriver (for the spindle screw).

  • Isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning old grease).

  • High-quality synthetic reel grease (e.g., Penn Precision or Shimano).

  • Light reel oil.

  • Cotton swabs and a soft toothbrush.

Step 1: Basic Disassembly

  1. Remove the Spool: Press the captive release lever located on the front of the spool face. Pull the spool straight off the frame.

  2. Clear the Line: Ensure no backing or fly line is tangled behind the spool or around the spindle.

  3. Access the Drag: On the MTX series, the drag system is "semi-sealed." You generally do not need to disassemble the internal carbon fiber discs unless there is a major mechanical failure.

Step 2: Cleaning the Components

  • The Frame and Spool: Rinse with fresh water if the reel has been exposed to dirt or salt. Use a soft toothbrush to remove grit from the carbon fiber lattice frame. Dry thoroughly.

  • The Spindle: Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to wipe away old, darkened grease from the spindle (the center shaft) and the inside of the spool's center hole.

  • The O-Ring: Check the rubber O-ring on the spindle for cracks or dryness.

Step 3: Lubrication

Hardy reels thrive on "less is more" when it comes to lubrication.

  1. Spindle: Apply a very thin film of synthetic grease to the spindle. Do not over-apply, as this attracts grit.

  2. Drag Knob: If the drag knob feels gritty, apply one drop of light oil to the threads beneath the knob.

  3. Handle: Apply one drop of oil to the base of the handle assembly to ensure it spins freely.

  4. The Drag Surface: Do not apply oil or grease to the carbon fiber drag discs. These are designed to run dry. Lubricating them will cause the drag to slip or "stutter."

Step 4: Reversing the Retrieve (Left/Right Hand)

If the "repair" is actually a need to change the wind direction:

  1. Remove the spool.

  2. Locate the one-way bearing on the spindle or inside the spool hub (depending on the specific MTX sub-generation).

  3. Slide the bearing out, flip it over, and slide it back in.

  4. Test the "click" and resistance to ensure the drag engages in the correct direction.

Step 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Slide the spool back onto the frame until you hear a distinct click from the locking lever.

  2. Check the Drag: Turn the drag knob to the maximum setting to ensure it engages firmly, then back it off to the lowest setting to check for free-spooling.

  3. Wipe Down: Use a microfiber cloth to remove any excess grease from the exterior carbon frame.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Gritty Sound: Usually caused by sand trapped in the carbon fiber lattice. Use compressed air or a high-pressure water rinse (spool removed).

  • Slipping Drag: Usually indicates that oil or grease has leaked onto the carbon drag washers. Clean the washers with isopropyl alcohol to restore friction.

  • Spool Wobble: Ensure the spindle screw is tight and the O-ring is properly seated.
