The Hardy Cascapedia Large Arbour (CLS) 7000 is a high-performance disc-drag reel known for its "Color Line System" (CLS), which allows for quick spool changes using a locking ring. While these reels are built to last, they require periodic maintenance and occasional repairs to the drag assembly or spool housing.

Essential Tools and Materials

  • Screwdrivers: Fine-tipped flathead and a small Phillips head.

  • Cleaning Agent: Isopropyl alcohol or mild dish soap.

  • Lubrication: High-quality synthetic reel grease (e.g., Penn Precision) and light reel oil.

  • Other: Microfiber cloth, soft-bristle toothbrush, and a tray to hold small parts.

Step 1: Disassembly and Spool Removal

The CLS 7000 features a unique tool-less spool removal system.

  1. Rotate the locking ring on the front of the spool to the "Open" position.

  2. Pull the spool straight off the main spindle.

  3. Note: If the spool feels stuck, do not pry it. Apply a drop of penetrating oil to the spindle, wait five minutes, and try again.

Step 2: Servicing the Drag System

The CLS uses a sealed carbon-fiber disc drag. While the inner discs are generally maintenance-free, the surrounding housing can accumulate grit.

  1. Locate the drag knob on the back of the reel frame.

  2. Unscrew the center screw of the drag knob to remove the cap.

  3. Check the clicker pawl and spring. If the reel has lost its "click" or feels mushy, the spring is likely fatigued or the pawl is worn.

  4. Clean the area with a toothbrush and alcohol. Apply a tiny amount of grease to the clicker teeth, but keep the carbon drag surfaces dry unless they are specifically designated as "wet" discs.

Step 3: Main Spindle and Bearing Maintenance

The spindle is the heart of the reel's smooth rotation.

  1. Wipe the main spindle clean of old, darkened grease.

  2. Inspect for any scoring or burrs. If the metal is scratched, use extremely fine emery paper (2000 grit) to smooth it out.

  3. Apply a light coat of synthetic grease to the spindle shaft.

  4. One-Way Bearing: If the reel is slipping or engaging in both directions, the one-way clutch bearing may be contaminated. Clean it thoroughly with a solvent and apply one drop of very thin oil. Do not over-grease this bearing, or it will fail to engage.

Step 4: The CLS Locking Mechanism

The "Color Line System" uses three small O-rings or gaskets to secure the line identification.

  1. Inspect the O-rings on the spool for cracks or dry rot.

  2. If the spool feels loose when locked, replace the O-rings with standard size equivalents (available at most hardware stores).

  3. Apply a thin film of silicone grease to the O-rings to prevent them from sticking to the frame.

Step 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Slide the spool back onto the spindle, ensuring it seats fully.

  2. Turn the locking ring back to the "Closed" position.

  3. Drag Test: Set the drag to the minimum setting and pull line; it should be smooth. Increase to maximum; it should be firm without "stuttering."

  4. Directional Check: Ensure the reel only retrieves in one direction and the drag engages in the other.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Issue Likely Cause Solution
Gritty feeling Salt or sand in the spindle housing Deep clean with soap/water; re-grease
Silent retrieve Broken or bent clicker spring Reshape the spring or replace
Spool wobbles Worn spindle bushing or loose locking ring Check O-rings; tighten internal frame screws
Drag won't tighten Compressed drag washers or stripped threads Replace drag stack or inspect knob threads
