Comprehensive Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6600AB Anti-Backlash (08-01)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6600AB (model code 08-01) is a specialized piece of engineering designed to minimize "professional overruns" through its unique mechanical braking system. To keep this vintage workhorse performing with modern precision, a deep-clean and specific lubrication regimen are essential.

This guide focuses on the mechanical restoration of the 08-01 version, ensuring the anti-backlash mechanism remains responsive and the gear train operates silently.

Tools and Supplies Required

  • Wrenches: 10mm nut driver or the original Abu flat wrench.

  • Screwdrivers: Small flathead and a #1 Phillips head.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Simple Green, naphtha, or specialized reel cleaner.

  • Lubricants: * Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease: For heavy-load metal-on-metal contact.

    • Deuthlon Semi-Fluid Grease/Oil: For the levelwind system.

  • Schematic Reference: Ensure you have the 08-01 parts diagram to track the Anti-Backlash spring orientation.

Step 1: External Disassembly

Begin by removing the handle nut cover and the 10mm handle nut. Slide off the handle, the spring washer, and the star drag. Note the orientation of the Drag Washers as you remove the side plate screws.

For the 6600AB, the right-side plate houses the main gear train. Carefully lift the side plate away. Unlike the "CT" (Casting Trophy) models which are open-framed, the 6600AB features a full levelwind assembly. This means you must inspect the idler gear located on the interior of the left-side plate.

Step 2: Servicing the Drive Train

Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Clean the metal washers until they are mirror-bright. If the drag washers are carbon fiber, leave them dry or use a very light coat of specialized drag grease.

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Inspect the teeth for burrs. Apply Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the main gear. Do not over-grease; a thin, even coat ensures the pinion gear engages without creating hydraulic drag.

  • Anti-Backlash Mechanism: The "AB" system relies on a pivoting cradle. Ensure the pivot points are clean of old, hardened grease. Use a drop of light oil on the pivot to ensure the mechanism moves freely when line tension changes.

Step 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear Maintenance

Because the 6600AB is not a CT model, it utilizes a plastic Idler Gear to drive the worm shaft. This is a common point of failure if neglected.

  • Idler Gear: Located on the non-drive side. Remove the C-clip, clean the post, and apply Deuthlon Oil. Using heavy grease here will slow down your spool speed and reduce casting distance.

  • Worm Shaft (Levelwind): Clean the tracks of the worm gear with a soft brush. Apply Deuthlon Oil to the length of the shaft. This high-speed component requires low-viscosity lubrication to facilitate the rapid oscillation required during a cast.

Step 4: Spool Bearings and Centrifugal Brakes

Remove the spool. The 6600AB features two stainless steel ball bearings. Soak these in solvent to remove any grit. Once dry, test the spin. If they are silent, apply a single drop of high-speed bearing oil.

Check the centrifugal brake weights on the spool flange. Ensure they are dry and move freely on their pins. Any oil on these weights will significantly reduce their braking effectiveness, leading to the backlashes the "AB" system is designed to prevent.

Step 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Reinstall the spool into the frame.

  2. Align the drive shaft and seat the right-side plate.

  3. Replace the star drag, ensuring the spring washers (Bellville washers) are facing each other like this: ().

  4. Tighten the handle nut and secure the locking screw.

Functional Check: Engage the freespool and pull line against the AB mechanism. The "flipper" should engage and disengage smoothly. If the levelwind jitters, re-examine the idler gear alignment.
