Precision Maintenance Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6501 Inshore (17 03)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6501 Inshore (Model Revision 17 03) is a high-performance, left-hand retrieve round reel built for the abrasive realities of saltwater angling. This specific 17 03 iteration features a reinforced frame and corrosion-resistant internals. As a synchronized "CS" style reel, it maintains a mechanical link between the spool and the line guide during both the retrieve and the cast.

Based on the 17 03 schematic, this model utilizes a nylon idler gear and a worm shaft assembly. Keeping these components synchronized and low-friction is the secret to maintaining the long-distance casting capabilities this reel is known for.

Phase 1: Systematic Teardown

  1. Drive Side Access: For the 6501, the primary mechanics are located on the left side. Remove the handle nut, the handle, and the star drag wheel. Loosen the three captive screws and lift the left side plate to reveal the internal drive bridge.

  2. Spool Extraction: Carefully slide the spool out of the frame. Note the position of the centrifugal brake weights on the spool spindle. In the 17 03, these are often "6-pin" styles that must be kept clean of any oil.

  3. Levelwind Removal: On the bottom of the line guide carriage, unscrew the pawl cap. Remove the moon-shaped pawl. Slide the worm shaft out from the frame to begin the degreasing process.

Phase 2: Drive Gear Service and Lubrication

The 17 03 relies on a high-torque brass main gear and a stainless steel pinion. These are the "heavy lifters" of the reel and require a barrier lubricant that can withstand high pressure.

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Use a solvent to strip away old, contaminated lubricant. Apply a generous layer of marine-grade gear grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. The grease acts as a cushion, reducing noise and preventing metal-on-metal wear during high-speed retrieves or heavy fights.

  • Clutch and Yoke: Apply a light film of grease to the pinion yoke and the kick lever to ensure the thumb bar engages and disengages with a crisp, tactile click.

Phase 3: Synchronized System Optimization

Because the levelwind on the 17 03 moves during the cast, any friction here acts as a "brake." Using the right lubricant on the idler and worm shaft is critical for maximum distance.

  • Idler Gear: The white nylon idler gear transfers energy from the spool to the worm shaft. Apply Deuthlon oil to the teeth of this idler gear. Deuthlon's unique formula provides a slick surface that doesn't "clump" like traditional grease, ensuring the gears spin with minimal resistance.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft. This high-performance oil allows the pawl to track through the grooves at high velocity without the "stutter" often caused by heavier greases, which can trap salt crystals and sand.

Phase 4: Bearing and Corrosion Protection

  1. Stainless Bearings: The 17 03 is equipped with shielded, corrosion-resistant ball bearings. Soak them in a degreaser to remove any salt residue.

  2. Lubrication: Add exactly one drop of ultra-light high-speed oil to each bearing.

  3. Frame Guard: Wipe the inner surfaces of the frame and the side plates with a thin film of grease. This creates a hydrophobic barrier that prevents saltwater from "creeping" into the screw threads and seams.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Re-installation: Slide the worm shaft back into the shroud and secure the line guide. Drop the pawl back into the carriage, ensuring it is seated in the worm shaft track before tightening the cap.

  2. Closing the Reel: Slide the spool back into the frame and realign the left-side plate. Tighten the thumb screws in a staggered pattern to ensure even pressure.

  3. Final Test: Turn the handle to verify the levelwind is tracking correctly. Test the drag range by tightening the star and ensuring the carbon washers provide a smooth, non-jerky payout.

By consistently using grease on the main and pinion gears and Deuthlon oil on the idler and levelwind components, you ensure your 6501 Inshore 17 03 remains a smooth-casting, saltwater-ready machine.
