Expert Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6501 Inshore (17 00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6501 Inshore (Foot Number 17 00) is a left-hand drive powerhouse designed specifically to withstand the corrosive environments of coastal saltwater fishing. Featuring upgraded stainless steel components and a high-performance drag system, this "Inshore" variant requires meticulous maintenance to prevent salt crystallization within the internal gears.
According to the 17 00 schematic, this model features a fully synchronized system. Being a non-CT model, it includes a nylon idler gear and a levelwind worm gear that must remain perfectly timed with the spool rotation to ensure even line stripping during heavy runs.
Component Breakdown & Cleaning
Saltwater is the primary enemy of the 6501 Inshore. Before re-lubricating, every component must be stripped of salt residue.
-
Side Plate Access: Unscrew the three bridge screws to remove the left-hand side plate. Remove the spool and inspect the frame for green oxidation (verdigris).
-
Ultrasonic Cleaning: For best results, place the metal frame and brass gears in an ultrasonic cleaner. If unavailable, scrub the teeth of the gears with a stiff nylon brush and a specialized salt-neutralizing solvent.
Gear Train Lubrication
The 6501 Inshore relies on a high-torque gear set to pull stubborn fish from cover.
-
Main & Pinion Gears: These components bear the highest mechanical load. Apply a thick, water-resistant grease to the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. Ensure the grease is "tacky" enough to stay on the teeth during high-speed rotations, providing a protective barrier against moisture.
-
Drive Shaft: Apply a light coat of grease to the drive shaft assembly to ensure the anti-reverse bearing (IAR) seats correctly and operates without slipping.
Levelwind & Idler System Optimization
In the 17 00 model, the levelwind is always engaged. This creates friction that can hinder casting distance if not lubricated with the correct viscosity.
-
Idler Gear: The white nylon idler gear transfers power from the spool to the worm shaft. Apply Deuthlon oil to the idler gear teeth. This reduces the mechanical "hum" and minimizes the energy required to move the line guide.
-
Worm Shaft & Pawl: Clean the worm shaft of all old debris. Apply Deuthlon oil across the length of the worm shaft. Unlike heavy greases that trap salt spray and sand, Deuthlon provides a slick, high-speed surface that allows the pawl to transition smoothly at either end of the stroke.
Spool and Bearing Care
-
Shielded Bearings: The Inshore model often uses shielded stainless steel bearings. Carefully remove the shields if possible to flush out trapped salt.
-
Oil Application: Use a single drop of high-speed oil on each bearing.
-
Brake Weights: Ensure the centrifugal brake blocks are clean and dry. Any oil on the brake race will cause inconsistent casting and potential "birdsnests."
Final Assembly & Saltwater Seal
-
Seating the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the 17 00 specific brake plate aligns with the pinion yoke.
-
Side Plate Closure: Secure the side plate screws. Wipe down the exterior with a silicone-impregnated cloth to add an extra layer of corrosion resistance.
-
Drag Test: Tighten the star drag and pull line manually to ensure the carbon washers transition smoothly without "jerking."
Using Deuthlon oil on the idler and levelwind and a heavy-duty grease on the main and pinion gears ensures your 6501 Inshore remains a reliable tool for years of coastal angling.
