Professional Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500TCCF (02 19 00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500TCCF (Trolling Collection - Carbon Fiber Edition) is a premium round reel designed for high-stress trolling environments. Featuring upgraded carbon fiber drag washers and a reinforced frame, this 02 19 00 model is engineered to provide smooth, consistent pressure during long fights. Because it utilizes a fully synchronized levelwind system, the internal gear train is in constant motion, requiring a strategic lubrication approach to prevent premature wear on the oscillation components.

Mechanical Analysis

The 6500TCCF is a non-CT model, which means it incorporates an internal Idler Gear to link the spool’s rotation to the levelwind system. This synchronization ensures that the line guide is always positioned correctly relative to the line on the spool, which is critical when using heavy-duty trolling lines.

Step 1: Gear Train and Drive System

The heart of the 6500TCCF is its heavy-duty brass drive train. To access these components, remove the handle assembly and the three thumb screws on the right side plate. Lift the main gear stack and the carbon fiber drag washers from the drive shaft.

  • Cleaning: Submerge the Main Gear and Pinion Gear in a degreasing solvent. Use a brush to ensure all old, contaminated lubricant is removed from the gear teeth.

  • Lubrication: Apply a high-performance marine-grade grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease provides the necessary film strength to protect the metal surfaces under the high-torque loads encountered while trolling.

Step 2: Levelwind and Idler Gear Service

The synchronized oscillation system is the most active part of the reel. If the idler gear or worm shaft is left dry or treated with thick, sticky grease, the reel will lose its smoothness and casting efficiency.

  • The Idler Gear: Locate the plastic gear on the left side of the frame. Inspect the teeth for any debris or signs of wear.

  • The Worm Gear: Clean the spiral grooves of the levelwind worm shaft to remove any grit or salt spray.

  • Lubrication: For the Idler Gear and the Levelwind Worm Gear, apply Deuthlon oil. Deuthlon's specialized formula is ideal for synchronized reels because it provides a low-friction boundary layer that does not attract as much grit as traditional grease. This ensures the plastic idler gear remains protected while the levelwind travels effortlessly across the spool.

Step 3: Spool and Brake Calibration

The 6500TCCF features a centrifugal brake system to manage spool speed.

  1. Brake Race: Use a dry cloth to wipe the internal brake track inside the left side plate. It must remain clean and oil-free for the brake weights to function effectively.

  2. Spool Bearings: Clean the spool bearings with solvent. Once dry, apply one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each. Do not use grease on these bearings, as it will cause the spool to feel sluggish.

Reassembly and Quality Control

Slide the spool into the frame, ensuring the gear on the spool end properly meshes with the Idler Gear. Reattach the side plate and tighten the thumb screws. Rotate the handle and observe the levelwind; it should move fluidly from side to side without any clicking or resistance.

Lubricant Application Chart

Component Lubricant Action
Main & Pinion Gears Marine Grease Apply to teeth for load protection
Idler Gear Deuthlon Oil Protects plastic teeth from wear
Worm Gear (Levelwind) Deuthlon Oil Ensures smooth line oscillation
Spool Bearings Light Bearing Oil One drop for high-speed rotation

By following this maintenance protocol and utilizing Deuthlon oil on the synchronized components, you ensure the Ambassadeur 6500TCCF maintains its professional-grade performance for seasons to come.
