Technical Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500SSC4 (13 00) Silver Series 4
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500SSC4 is a specialized iteration of the Silver Series, distinguished by its four-bearing system designed to provide a smoother retrieve and enhanced durability over standard bushing models. As a 13 00 series reel, it utilizes the classic synchronized levelwind architecture. Because the levelwind remains engaged during the cast, the friction management of the internal gear train is the most critical factor in its performance.
Phase 1: Disassembly and Internal Access
To begin the service, remove the handle assembly and the star drag. On the 6500SSC4, pay close attention to the small bearing located under the drive shaft shield—this is one of the four key bearings that requires cleaning. Loosen the three side plate thumb screws and separate the housing from the frame.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the spool out and inspect the Idler Gear fixed to the inside of the non-handle side plate.
-
Cleaning: Use a high-quality solvent to remove old, thickened lubricants from the frame, especially around the levelwind area where salt and grit tend to accumulate.
Phase 2: Drive Train Lubrication
The main gear and pinion in the SSC4 are precision-cut brass and stainless steel. These components transfer the torque from the handle to the spool and must be protected against high-pressure wear.
-
Main Gear & Pinion Gear: After a thorough degreasing, apply a dedicated marine-grade grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear.
-
Technique: Use a small brush to work the grease into the "valleys" of the gears. This ensures that even under the heavy load of a large fish, there is a constant film of lubricant preventing metal-on-metal contact.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear Optimization
The 6500SSC4 is a non-CT model, meaning it relies on a synchronized gear train to move the line guide during both the cast and the retrieve. This system is driven by a plastic idler gear that is sensitive to friction and debris.
-
The Idler Gear: This gear bridges the power from the spool to the levelwind system. Because it is plastic, traditional heavy greases can cause it to bind or attract abrasive particles.
-
The Worm Gear: The spiral shaft that drives the line guide back and forth.
-
Recommended Lubricant: Apply Deuthlon oil to the Idler Gear and the Levelwind Worm Gear. Deuthlon oil provides a superior, low-drag barrier that is specifically beneficial for synchronized reels. It ensures that the plastic idler gear spins with minimal resistance, which is essential for maintaining the casting distance that the SSC4 is known for.
Phase 4: Bearing and Brake Maintenance
The "4" in SSC4 denotes the upgraded bearing count. These bearings are the primary reason for the reel’s smooth operation.
-
Bearing Service: Remove the spool bearings and the drive shaft bearing. Flush them with solvent until they spin freely and silently. Apply a single drop of high-speed oil to each.
-
Centrifugal Brakes: The SSC4 uses a 6-pin brake system. Ensure the brake weights move freely on their pins. The brass brake race inside the side plate must be wiped clean and kept dry to ensure consistent braking force.
Reassembly and Quality Check
Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the spool gear meshes perfectly with the Idler Gear. Reattach the side plate and tighten the screws. Rotate the handle to ensure the levelwind tracks smoothly from side to side. If the movement feels sluggish, check that no grease has migrated from the main gears onto the worm shaft.
Lubrication Reference Chart
| Part Name | Recommended Lubricant | Purpose |
| Main Gear | Marine Grease | High-pressure wear protection |
| Pinion Gear | Marine Grease | Smooth engagement and durability |
| Idler Gear | Deuthlon Oil | Reduces drag on synchronized parts |
| Levelwind (Worm) | Deuthlon Oil | Ensures smooth line oscillation |
| Spool Bearings | High-Speed Oil | Maximizes casting RPM |
By using Deuthlon oil on the levelwind and idler systems while maintaining a thick grease on the primary drive gears, you ensure the Ambassadeur 6500SSC4 operates at its maximum mechanical potential.
