Maintenance and Technical Service: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KCP Pink Custom (02 20 01)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KCP Pink Custom (02 20 01) combines high-visibility aesthetics with the time-tested reliability of the Swedish-designed round reel. This specific revision (02 20 01) features the synchronized levelwind system found in the KCP series, distinguishing it from the CT models. Because the line guide moves in tandem with the spool during the cast, the efficiency of the gear train is the primary factor in determining the reel's casting distance and smoothness.

This guide details the steps to overhaul the 02 20 01 to keep it in showroom condition and peak mechanical form.

1. Disassembly and Primary Inspection

Begin by unscrewing the three captive thumb screws to remove the handle-side plate. Slide the spool out of the frame cage to access the internal drive components.

  • Idler Gear Check: Locate the idler gear mounted on the non-handle side plate. As this is not a CT version, this gear is the bridge that communicates spool rotation to the levelwind. Inspect the nylon teeth for any debris or signs of thinning.

  • Worm Shaft and Pawl: Remove the pawl cap from the line guide and extract the pawl. Check for "flat-spotting" on the pawl tips. Pull the worm shaft out of the shroud to ensure the grooves are clear of old, hardened lubricants.

  • Drive Train: Remove the handle, star drag, and the side plate cover to expose the main gear and the pinion gear assembly.

2. Cleaning and Degreasing

For a high-performance reel like the 6500KCP, a thorough cleaning is non-negotiable. Use a residue-free degreaser to strip all moving parts.

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the stainless steel bearings until they spin freely. Any resistance here will significantly handicap the reel's casting ability.

  • Frame and Shroud: In the Pink Custom model, ensure the internal frame rails where the line guide slides are polished and clean. Salt or grit buildup on these rails can cause the levelwind to stutter, putting unnecessary strain on the idler gear.

3. Lubrication Protocol for the 02 20 01

The performance of the 6500KCP is optimized by using different weights of lubricant for the high-speed and high-torque sections of the reel.

Levelwind and Idler Gear Assembly

The levelwind system creates the most mechanical drag during a cast. To counteract this, apply Deuthlon oil to the idler gear and the worm shaft. Deuthlon's unique formula provides a ultra-thin, high-velocity film that stays in place better than standard oils but lacks the "stickiness" of grease. This allows the levelwind and idler gears to cycle with maximum RPMs, ensuring the 6500KCP maintains its legendary casting distance.

Main Gear and Pinion Gear

The main drive gear and the pinion gear are the workhorses of the reel. To protect these metal surfaces from wear and corrosion, apply a premium reel grease. Use a brush to apply an even coating to the teeth of the main gear. Ensure the pinion gear is lightly greased where it contacts the yoke, which will facilitate a smooth transition between "free spool" and "retrieve" modes.

4. Reassembly and Performance Testing

  1. Rebuild the Levelwind: Slide the worm shaft back into the frame and secure the line guide. Reinstall the idler gear on its post, ensuring the e-clip is snapped firmly into its groove.

  2. Drive System Installation: Replace the main gear and the Carbon Matrix drag stack. Verify that the anti-reverse dog is properly engaged with the ratchet at the base of the drive shaft.

  3. Spool Integration: Place the spool into the frame. Align the spool’s drive gear with the idler gear to ensure the synchronized system is engaged.

  4. Final Adjustments: Secure the side plate and tighten the thumb screws. Adjust the mechanical brake knob until the spool has a minute amount of lateral play. This ensures the 6500KCP 02 20 01 operates with the lowest possible friction during use.
