Specialized Repair and Maintenance: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KCP Pink Custom (02 20 00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KCP Pink Custom (02 20 00) is a striking, limited-edition variant of the legendary round reel series. While its aesthetic is unique, the internal engineering follows the reliable C3-derived architecture. As this is a KCP model rather than a CT version, it features a synchronized levelwind system. Maintaining the mechanical synchronization between the spool and the line guide is essential for the 02 20 00 to perform as well as it looks, particularly when aiming for smooth, long-distance casts.
1. Breakdown and Internal Assessment
Start the service by removing the three knurled screws on the handle-side assembly to separate the side plate from the frame.
-
Idler Gear and Levelwind: Locate the idler gear on the non-handle side. In this non-CT model, the idler gear acts as the critical link that transfers motion from the spool to the levelwind worm shaft. Remove the small e-clip and pull the gear to inspect the center bore for signs of ovaling or friction-related heat damage.
-
Worm Shaft Removal: Slide the worm shaft out of the levelwind shroud. In custom-colored models like the Pink KCP, ensure the shroud and frame rails are free of salt buildup, which can cause the carriage to bind and mar the finish.
2. Cleaning and Component Prep
Proper repair begins with a sterile mechanical environment. Use a high-quality degreaser to strip away old, contaminated lubricants.
-
Pawl Inspection: The line guide pawl is the most frequent point of failure in the 6500 series. Check the tips of the pawl for sharp edges. If the tips are rounded, the levelwind may "stack" line on one side of the spool.
-
Bearing Recovery: The 6500KCP relies on high-speed stainless steel bearings. Clean them thoroughly and dry them with compressed air (without over-spinning them) to ensure they are completely free of grit.
3. Lubrication Strategy for the 6500KCP
To optimize the 02 20 00 for both durability and casting performance, specific lubricants must be applied to the appropriate friction zones.
Idler Gear and Levelwind Worm
Because the 6500KCP is not a CT model, the levelwind system moves during every cast, creating a significant amount of "parasitic" drag. To minimize this, use Deuthlon oil on the idler gear and the worm shaft. This specialized oil is formulated to provide a slick, low-friction coating that doesn't "clog" like grease, allowing the line guide to oscillate rapidly without slowing down the spool's RPM during the cast.
Main Gear and Pinion Gear
The drivetrain—comprising the large brass main gear and the pinion—handles the heavy torque during the retrieve. For these metal-on-metal surfaces, apply a high-quality marine-grade grease. Use a brush to coat each tooth of the main gear individually. This ensures a quiet, smooth mesh and protects the gears from corrosion, which is vital for maintaining the longevity of a custom-finished reel.
4. Reassembly and Tuning
-
Levelwind Installation: Place the worm shaft into the frame, drop the pawl into the carriage, and tighten the cap. Reinstall the idler gear on its post and secure it with the e-clip.
-
Drive Stack Reassembly: Slide the drive shaft back into the side plate. Layer the drag washers and the main gear, ensuring the anti-reverse dog is clicking correctly against the ratchet.
-
Spool Seating: Insert the spool back into the frame. Ensure the pinion gear is properly seated in the yoke before closing the side plate.
-
Final Calibration: Tighten the thumb screws and adjust the mechanical tension knob. For the 6500KCP, the spool should have just a "click" of side-play to ensure the bearings aren't compressed, allowing for maximum casting efficiency.
