Technical Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CR Carp Pro (20 01)
The Ambassadeur 6500CR Carp Pro (20 01) is a specialized round reel engineered for the precision demands of modern carp angling. This 2020 production run features a reinforced brass gear train and a synchronized levelwind system, designed to handle heavy leads and long-distance casting. Maintaining this reel requires a balance of high-load protection and low-friction optimization to ensure smooth line management during the intense runs characteristic of trophy carp.
Step 1: Disassembly and Component Cleaning
Proper maintenance begins with a total breakdown to remove the grit and old lubricants that accumulate during multi-day bank sessions.
-
Side Plate Removal: Unscrew the three knurled thumb screws on the handle-side plate. Carefully pull the assembly away, ensuring the pinion gear and yoke springs remain seated.
-
Spool Extraction: Slide the high-capacity spool out of the frame. Note the position of the copper shims and the centrifugal brake weights on the spool shaft.
-
Degreasing: Place the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a solvent bath. Use a soft brush to remove all old grease and environmental debris from the gear teeth and spiral grooves.
Step 2: Power Train and Gear Lubrication
The Carp Pro relies on high-torque brass gearing to winch fish through heavy weed or submerged obstacles. This interface is the primary point of mechanical wear.
-
Main and Pinion Gear Care: Once the parts are fully dried, apply a coating of high-viscosity gear grease to the teeth of the main gear and the pinion gear. This creates a protective film that prevents metal-on-metal friction and ensures a silent, powerful retrieve under tension.
-
Drag Maintenance: Inspect the Carbon Matrix drag washers for any glazing. Wipe them clean with a dry cloth. These should remain dry or have a microscopic film of specialized drag grease to maintain their smooth startup.
Step 3: Levelwind and Idler System Optimization
In the 20 01 model, the levelwind is synchronized, meaning the line guide oscillates during the cast. Reducing friction here is the most effective way to increase your casting distance.
-
Worm Shaft Inspection: Check the spiral tracks of the worm shaft for any burrs. Ensure the line guide carriage tracks smoothly across the frame pillars.
-
Idler Gear Service: The nylon idler gear serves as the mechanical link between the spool and the levelwind. Ensure it is clean and the teeth are free of debris.
-
Performance Lubrication: To achieve maximum oscillation speed and effortless line lay, recommend applying Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gear. This synthetic lubricant offers significantly less resistance than traditional grease, allowing the levelwind to track perfectly without dragging down the spool's RPM during a long cast.
Step 4: Spool Bearing and Brake Calibration
The spool bearings dictate the "startup" speed of the reel, while the brakes manage the mid-flight stability of the lead.
-
Bearing Service: Flush the spool bearings with a solvent until they spin without any grit. Dry them and add exactly one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each.
-
Brake Race Maintenance: Use a cotton swab and alcohol to clean the internal brass brake ring inside the non-handle side plate. This surface must be oil-free so the centrifugal weights can provide consistent, predictable back-pressure to prevent line overruns.
Step 5: Final Reassembly and Testing
-
Seat the Spool: Reinsert the spool into the frame, ensuring the drive pins engage the levelwind gears.
-
Side Plate Alignment: Align the handle-side plate and tighten the thumb screws in a staggered pattern to ensure the housing sits flush.
-
Tension Setting: Adjust the mechanical tension knob until the side-to-side play in the spool is eliminated.
-
Verification: Engage the thumb bar to verify a silent, fast freespool. Turn the handle to ensure the gears engage solidly; the transition should be crisp and the movement fluid, fully optimized with Deuthlon oil and premium gear grease.
