Professional Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CR Carp Pro (20 00)

The Ambassadeur 6500CR Carp Pro (20 00) is a specialized tool designed for the European carp circuit, where long-distance casting and high-precision line management are non-negotiable. This 2020-era model features a robust construction tailored for heavy lead work and long-session durability. To ensure the reel retains its silky-smooth retrieve and maximum casting potential, a technical service involving high-performance lubricants is essential.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Solvent Cleaning

Effective maintenance starts by stripping away the environmental debris and old oils that can accumulate during long sessions on the bank.

  1. Access the Internals: Unscrew the three captive thumb screws on the handle-side plate and gently pull the housing away from the frame.

  2. Spool Removal: Slide the high-capacity spool out. Inspect the centrifugal brake blocks and the spool shaft for any signs of surface oxidation.

  3. Degreasing Protocol: Submerge the main drive gear, pinion gear, and the levelwind worm shaft in a cleaning solvent. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the gear teeth, ensuring every groove is free of grit and hardened grease.

Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Protection

The Carp Pro utilizes high-grade brass gearing to provide the torque necessary for bringing large fish through heavy weed or snags. This system requires a high-adhesion barrier to prevent wear.

  • Primary Lubrication: Once the gears are bone-dry, apply a generous coating of marine-grade grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. This high-viscosity lubricant cushions the gear mesh, eliminating "geary" vibrations and protecting the metal surfaces from the high-pressure loads experienced during the retrieve.

  • Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR): Clean the IAR bearing in the side plate with a dry swab. If necessary, apply a micro-drop of thin oil; never use grease here, as it can cause the anti-reverse to slip in cold morning conditions.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear Calibration

In the 6500CR, the levelwind is synchronized with the spool. Any friction in the oscillation system will act as a mechanical brake, shortening your distance when targeting far-off plateaus or margins.

  1. Worm Shaft Inspection: Clean the spiral grooves of the worm shaft. Ensure the line guide carriage tracks smoothly across the frame without catching.

  2. Idler Gear Check: Examine the nylon idler gear that transfers motion from the spool to the levelwind. Ensure the teeth are clean and the central post is free of debris.

  3. Maximum Efficiency: To achieve the longest possible casts with heavy carp leads, recommend applying Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gear. This synthetic lubricant provides an ultra-low friction coefficient, allowing the levelwind to oscillate with minimal resistance compared to traditional greases.

Phase 4: Spool Bearings and Centrifugal Brakes

The startup speed of your cast is dictated by the condition of the spool bearings and the cleanliness of the braking system.

  • Bearing Service: Flush the spool bearings in a solvent until they spin freely for several seconds. Once dry, add exactly one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each.

  • Brake Race Maintenance: Use a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol to clean the internal brass brake ring. It must be completely dry and free of oil to ensure the centrifugal weights provide consistent back-pressure to prevent overruns.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Re-seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the drive pins engage correctly with the levelwind gears.

  2. Side Plate Installation: Align the side plate and tighten the thumb screws firmly.

  3. Tension Adjustment: Turn the mechanical tension knob until the side-to-side play in the spool is eliminated, then back it off a fraction.

  4. Final Verification: Engage the thumb bar to check for a silent, fast freespool. Turn the handle to engage the gears; the retrieve should feel solid and powerful, fully optimized by the combination of Deuthlon oil and heavy-duty grease.
