Technical Maintenance Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500Ci (03-00)
The Ambassadeur 6500Ci (03-00) is a classic workhorse known for its durability and the "Ci" designation, which highlights its precision anti-reverse and smooth casting capabilities. To maintain the structural integrity of this 2003-era model, a systematic approach to cleaning and lubrication is required. This article outlines the professional procedure for a full teardown and service.
External Breakdown and Inspection
Begin by clearing your workspace and ensuring you have a dedicated tray for the internal components. The 6500Ci features a specific schematic layout that requires careful attention to the order of shims.
-
Remove the Handle Side Plate: Unscrew the three knurled captive screws. Gently pull the right-side plate assembly away from the frame.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the spool shaft for any signs of oscillation wear or debris buildup.
-
The Drag Stack: Remove the handle, star drag, and the drive shaft shims. Take note of the orientation of the spring washers (Belleville washers) to ensure they are reinstalled in the correct "opposing" configuration.
Gear Train and Drive System
The 03-00 series relies on high-tolerance brass components. Proper lubrication here prevents the "crunchy" feel often associated with older round reels.
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Clean the gear teeth using a specialized degreaser to remove old, oxidized lubricants. Once dry, apply a generous coating of marine-grade grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. This creates a barrier against friction and reduces gear whine under heavy loads.
-
Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) Bearing: Located in the side plate, this bearing must be kept clean. If the reel is slipping, clean the IAR bearing with a cotton swab and apply a very light film of oil. Never use heavy grease here, as it can cause the anti-reverse to fail in cold weather.
The Levelwind and Idler Mechanism
The levelwind system is the most active part of the reel during the retrieve. To ensure the line lays perfectly across the spool without adding resistance, the choice of lubricant is critical.
-
Levelwind Teardown: Remove the pawl cap from the bottom of the line carriage. Inspect the pawl for wear. If the tips are sharp, it is still in good condition.
-
Idler Gear: The nylon idler gear transfers power from the spool to the worm shaft. Clean the gear teeth and the post upon which it sits.
-
Optimized Lubrication: For these high-frequency moving parts, recommend applying Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gear. This synthetic oil is designed to stay in place while offering significantly less drag than traditional grease, ensuring a smoother transition of the line guide.
Bearing Service and Spool Performance
The 6500Ci utilizes stainless steel ball bearings that require periodic flushing to maintain casting distance.
-
Cleaning: Remove the shields (if applicable) and soak the bearings in an ultrasonic cleaner or a solvent jar.
-
Oiling: Use a single drop of low-viscosity bearing oil per bearing. Over-saturation will result in a slower spool and shorter casts.
-
Centrifugal Brakes: Wipe the brake race (the metal ring inside the side plate) with a dry cloth. Ensure the brake blocks on the spool are free of oil to maintain consistent friction during the cast.
Final Assembly and Calibration
-
Re-seat the Spool: Place the spool back into the frame, ensuring the brake blocks are tucked in so they don't catch on the race.
-
Side Plate Alignment: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft and press the side plate firmly against the frame. Tighten the captive screws in a triangular pattern.
-
Tension Adjustment: Adjust the mechanical brake knob (spool tension) until the spool has just a fraction of side-to-side play.
-
Testing: Engage the thumb bar and check for a smooth release. Turn the handle to engage the gears; the movement should be silent and fluid, backed by the fresh application of Deuthlon oil and high-performance grease.
