Comprehensive Repair and Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C4 (07-01)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C4 (model 07-01) is a high-speed, 4-bearing powerhouse known for its signature deep-blue finish and 6.3:1 gear ratio. This specific production run features the "Ultracast" spool design and a bearing-supported levelwind, making it one of the smoothest casting reels in the C-series lineup. To maintain its high-RPM performance and cranking power, a precise lubrication schedule is required.
Step 1: Side Plate and Spool Disassembly
Begin by loosening the three captive thumb screws on the handle side plate. Carefully pull the plate away from the frame to reveal the spool.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the spool off the fixed spindle. On the 07-01 model, the spool contains internal bearings. Inspect the six-pin centrifugal braking system; ensure the plastic brake weights move freely on their pins.
-
Brake Race Cleaning: Use a dry cotton swab to clean the brass brake race inside the side plate. It is vital that this area remains free of oil or grease to ensure consistent casting control.
Step 2: High-Speed Gear Train Maintenance
The 6.3:1 gear ratio in the C4 means the gears turn significantly faster than standard models, creating more heat and friction under load.
-
Teardown: Remove the handle, star drag, and the drive-side plate. Extract the main gear and the pinion gear from the yoke assembly.
-
Cleaning: Use a specialized degreaser to strip old, contaminated lubricant from the gear teeth. Inspect for any burrs or uneven wear patterns.
-
Lubrication: For the heavy-duty power transmission, apply a high-quality grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. A thin, even coating on the teeth provides the necessary film strength to protect the brass-on-steel interface during high-speed retrieves.
Step 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear Calibration
The C4’s efficiency relies on a synchronized levelwind system. Because this system tracks back and forth during the cast, any resistance here will directly kill your casting distance.
-
Worm Shaft Service: Remove the E-clip on the non-handle side to slide out the worm shaft and line guide. Check the pawl for wear.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the nylon idler gears that connect the spool’s rotation to the levelwind assembly. These gears must be clean of any sand or grit.
-
Lubrication: To achieve maximum fluidity, apply Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gears. Unlike traditional grease, which can become "tacky" and slow down the oscillation, Deuthlon oil offers a specialized low-viscosity barrier that ensures the levelwind keeps pace with the spool at high speeds.
Step 4: Bearing Service and Oiling
The 07-01 model utilizes stainless steel ball bearings to support the spool and the levelwind.
-
Flushing: Remove the bearings and soak them in a solvent until they spin without resistance. Dry them completely using compressed air or a lint-free cloth.
-
Oiling: Apply exactly one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each. Do not use grease here, as it will cause the bearings to "hydroplane" and significantly reduce spool speed.
Step 5: Reassembly and Bench Testing
Slide the spool back into the frame. Reattach the handle side plate, ensuring the pinion gear aligns perfectly with the spool shaft without being forced.
-
Tensioning: Secure the thumb screws and adjust the mechanical tension knob so the spool has only a fraction of side-to-side play.
-
Function Check: Disengage the spool to check for a long, quiet freespool. Engage the handle and ensure the levelwind moves smoothly across the frame.
By using grease for the high-torque main and pinion gears and Deuthlon oil for the high-speed levelwind and idler gears, you optimize the 6500C4 for both longevity and peak tournament-grade performance.
