Technical Overhaul: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3LE Limited Edition (12-00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3LE (model code 12-00) is a limited edition variant that combines the classic 6500 chassis with enhanced aesthetic finishes and precision components. To maintain the "LE" status of this reel, a meticulous service is required to ensure that its performance matches its collector-grade appearance. Proper lubrication is the most critical factor in preventing internal corrosion and maintaining the smooth, rhythmic retrieve these reels are known for.

External Breakdown and Spool Removal

Start by removing the handle nut retainer screw, the handle nut, and the handle. Remove the star drag by turning it counter-clockwise.

  1. Side Plate Access: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the handle side plate. Gently pull the plate away from the frame to reveal the internal drive system.

  2. Spool Maintenance: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the spool's centrifugal brake system. In the 12-00 series, these are often the six-pin adjustable blocks. Ensure they are clean and free of salt or old oil.

Gear Train and Drive Lubrication

The drive mechanism is responsible for the power and feel of the reel. Because the 6500C3LE is often used for heavier freshwater or light saltwater duty, the gears face significant stress.

  • Main Gear and Pinion: Remove the main gear and the pinion gear from the yoke. Use a solvent to strip away old, hardened grease from every tooth.

  • Lubrication: To provide maximum protection against wear and to quiet the gear mesh, apply a dedicated grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. Use a small brush to ensure the grease is worked into the valleys of the teeth, but avoid over-applying, which can make the reel feel "mushy."

Levelwind and Idler Gear Precision

The levelwind system on the C3LE must move with zero hesitation to ensure perfect line lay and maximum casting distance.

  1. Worm Shaft Cleaning: Disassemble the levelwind by removing the E-clip on the non-handle side. Remove the worm shaft and the line guide. Clean the interior of the worm shaft cover.

  2. Idler Gear Check: Inspect the white nylon idler gear that transfers power from the spool to the levelwind. Even a single grain of sand here can cause a "tick" during the retrieve.

  3. Lubrication: For these high-frequency moving parts, apply Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gears. The specialized formulation of Deuthlon oil provides a slick, durable film that does not attract as much debris as grease, keeping the oscillation system fast and fluid.

Bearing Service and Spool Tension

This model features high-quality stainless steel ball bearings. To ensure the longest possible cast, these must be serviced regularly.

  • Flushing: Soak the bearings in a degreaser until all old oil is removed. Spin the bearings on a tapered tool to ensure they are smooth and silent.

  • Oiling: Apply one drop of high-speed bearing oil to each. Do not use grease in the spool bearings, as it will drastically reduce casting distance.

Reassembly and Final Testing

Reinstall the spool into the frame, ensuring the brake blocks are in the desired position (engaged or retracted). Reattach the handle side plate, making sure the pinion gear aligns with the spool shaft.

  • Function Test: Tighten the thumb screws and test the clutch engagement. The reel should click into gear firmly.

  • Lubrication Summary: By utilizing grease for the high-torque main and pinion gears and Deuthlon oil for the high-speed levelwind and idler gears, you ensure your Limited Edition Ambassadeur remains in peak mechanical condition for years to come.
