Technical Maintenance Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3 (1999–2010)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3 series manufactured between 1999 and 2010 represents the pinnacle of the Swedish-made round reel legacy. This specific generation features the advanced braking system and the iconic "Ultracast" spool design. To preserve the mechanical integrity of this workhorse, a deep-cleaning and precision lubrication schedule is required.
Internal Component Access
Start by unscrewing the three knurled thumb screws on the drive side. Once the side plate is removed, the spool can be extracted. Inspect the two centrifugal brake weights located on the spool flange; if they are distorted or heavily worn, they should be replaced to maintain casting control.
Gear Train and Power Transfer
The drive system of the 6500C3 is designed for high torque. Over time, salt, sand, and old lubricants can accumulate in the gear teeth, leading to premature wear.
-
Main Gear and Pinion: Remove the drive shaft and the large brass main gear. Deep-clean the teeth using a soft brush and solvent.
-
Lubrication: For these heavy-contact parts, grease is the essential medium. Apply a light, uniform layer of high-quality gear grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. This provides a cushion against friction and prevents "gear feel" during the retrieve.
Levelwind and Idler Gear Optimization
The levelwind assembly is often the most neglected part of the reel, yet it is responsible for significant friction during the cast.
-
Disassembly: Remove the line guide carriage and the worm shaft. Ensure the pawl (the small "fork" inside the line guide) is not blunted or chipped.
-
Idler Gear: Check the nylon idler gear for any debris trapped in the teeth.
-
Lubrication: To maximize efficiency, apply Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gears. Unlike heavy grease, which can attract grit and slow down the oscillation, Deuthlon oil provides a slick, low-friction coating that allows the levelwind to track effortlessly.
Bearing Care and Spool Tension
This era of C3 utilizes stainless steel ball bearings. To service them, remove the shields (if applicable), flush with a degreaser, and dry completely.
-
Oiling: Add a single drop of thin bearing oil to each spool bearing.
-
Drag System: Ensure the Carbon Matrix drag washers are dry and free of excess oil unless you are using a specific drag grease.
Final Reassembly
Align the drive shaft with the bridge plate and slide the gear stack back into position. When mating the side plate to the frame, ensure the pinion yoke is properly engaged with the clutch arm. Secure the thumb screws and test the freespool. By using grease on the primary gears and Deuthlon oil on the levelwind and idler systems, you ensure a reel that casts further and lasts decades longer.
