Technical Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3 (Model 23 00)

The Ambassadeur 6500C3 (Foot Number 23 00) represents the most modern iteration of the classic C3 "workhorse." Following Abu Garcia’s standard dating convention, the "23" indicates a production start or revision from 2013, while "00" denotes the first revision of this specific design series.

This model features the advanced Carbon Matrix Drag, a 6-pin centrifugal brake system, and the ADS (Anti-Distortion Spool) design. As a synchronized levelwind reel, its performance relies on the precision of the link between the spool and the line guide. If the reel hasn't been serviced recently, factory grease may have migrated into the spool bearings, significantly "choking" your casting distance.

Phase 1: Precision Teardown and Inspection

To maintain the high-speed efficiency of the 23 00, break the reel down into its three primary modules.

  1. Drive Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled captive thumb screws. Pull the plate away to reveal the drive bridge and the spool.

  2. Spool and 3-Bearing System: Slide the spool out. The C3 (3-bearing) system features two high-speed stainless steel ball bearings and one IAR (Instant Anti-Reverse) roller bearing. Use a fine pick to remove the wire C-clips from the side plate pockets to extract the spool bearings.

  3. Drive Train Breakdown: Remove the handle, star drag, and the curved spring washers. Lift the bridge to expose the brass Duragear™ main gear and the Carbon Matrix drag stack. Inspect the pinion gear; the "23 00" model uses a refined yoke system—ensure the springs are not compressed or bent.

  4. Levelwind Assembly: Unscrew the pawl cap, remove the crescent-shaped pawl, and slide the worm gear out from the frame.

Phase 2: Cleaning and Degreasing Protocol

Modern C3 reels use a specific "blue" or "tan" factory grease that can become sticky if it sits in the levelwind for too long.

  • Hard Part Degreasing: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a high-grade degreaser. Use a soft brush to scrub the roots of the gear teeth until they are "surgically" clean.

  • Bearing Refresh: Soak the stainless steel ball bearings in isopropyl alcohol. Spin them while submerged to eject micro-grit. Once dried, they should spin silently. Important: Wipe the IAR roller bearing with a clean cloth; do not soak it in heavy solvent as it can damage the internal plastic cage.

  • Brake Drum Cleaning: Use a cotton swab with alcohol to clean the brass brake drum inside the non-handle side plate. Any oil on this surface will interfere with the 6-pin centrifugal brake, leading to "bird's nests."

Phase 3: High-Performance Lubrication Strategy

For the 23 00 to perform at "Pro Shop" standards, you must separate high-speed oscillation from high-torque drive.

Levelwind and Idler Gears (The Casting Chain)

The levelwind is synchronized, meaning it oscillates during the cast. To maximize distance, apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft and the teeth of the idler gears. This high-speed synthetic oil provides an ultra-slick surface that won't "clump" under high RPMs, ensuring the line guide tracks effortlessly across the spool.

Main and Pinion Gears (The Power Train)

The drive gears handle the mechanical torque of the retrieve. Apply a thin, even coat of high-viscosity gear grease to every tooth of the brass main gear. This grease acts as a hydraulic cushion, dampening vibration and ensuring the gear mesh feels "buttery" and silent under the load of a fish.

Phase 4: Reassembly and Mechanical Calibration

  1. Rebuild the Drive Bridge: Place the pinion gear into the yoke and seat the main gear on the drive shaft. Ensure the Carbon Matrix drag washers are clean and dry (unless using a specific drag grease).

  2. Bearing Lubrication: Place one drop of Deuthlon oil into each spool bearing. This ensures the spool reaches maximum velocity without the "drag" of heavy grease.

  3. Levelwind Integration: Reinstall the worm gear and line carriage. Place a drop of oil on the pawl before tightening the pawl cap.

  4. Closing the Reel: Realign the side plates and tighten the thumb screws in a staggered pattern. Reinstall the star drag and handle.

Technical Fine-Tuning

Once reassembled, adjust the mechanical tension knob until the spool has zero lateral play. Engage the thumb bar and give the spool a flick; with Deuthlon oil on the high-speed components and fresh grease on the gears, your Ambassadeur 6500C3 23 00 will deliver a silent, powerful, and frictionless performance.
