Technical Restoration Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C3 2-Speed (Model 01-03)
The Ambassadeur 6500C3 2-Speed (Foot Number 01-03) represents one of the most mechanically sophisticated round reels ever produced by Abu Garcia. This model features an automatic transmission that shifts from a 6.3:1 high-speed ratio down to a 3.8:1 power ratio when it senses a specific amount of drag resistance.
Because the shifting mechanism depends on the clean engagement of internal pawls and springs within the main gear hub, this reel is highly sensitive to old or thickened grease. Proper maintenance is required to ensure the "kick-down" feature remains responsive and the synchronized levelwind doesn't "choke" your casting distance.
Phase 1: Disassembly and 2-Speed Hub Analysis
The 01-03 model requires a more meticulous teardown than standard C3 models due to the dual-gear stack on the drive shaft.
-
Accessing the Power Side: Loosen the three captive thumb screws and remove the handle-side plate. Slide out the spool and set it aside.
-
The Shifting Drive Stack: Remove the handle and star drag. Lift the side plate cover to reveal the dual-gear assembly.
-
Note: Pay close attention to the small "shift-pawls" and the delicate springs located inside the larger main gear. If these are stuck with old grease, the reel will stay in high gear even under heavy load.
-
-
Bearing Extraction: As a "C3" model, it features three stainless steel ball bearings (two on the spool/side plates and one under the drive shaft). Use a fine pick to remove the retaining clips and extract them for a deep solvent soak.
-
Levelwind Breakdown: Unscrew the pawl cap, remove the crescent-shaped pawl, and slide the worm gear out from the frame.
Phase 2: Deep Cleaning and Degreasing
For an "automatic transmission" reel, any internal friction can cause the gear shift to fail or "hunt" between gears.
-
The Transmission Hub: Submerge the dual main gears, the shifting pawls, and the springs in a high-grade degreasing solvent. Use a soft brush to ensure the internal "steps" where the pawls engage are free of debris.
-
Bearing Refresh: Soak the ball bearings in isopropyl alcohol. Spin them while submerged to eject micro-grit. Once dried, they should spin silently.
-
The Frame: Wipe the interior of the frame clean. Ensure the plastic idler gear (which drives the levelwind) has clean teeth to prevent vibration during the cast.
Phase 3: Strategic Lubrication Protocol
To maintain "Pro" level performance, you must use a dual-viscosity approach: oil for casting speed and specialized grease for shifting reliability.
Levelwind and Idler Gears (The Casting Chain)
The levelwind is synchronized, meaning it moves during the cast. To minimize drag, apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft and the teeth of the idler gears. This ultra-low-friction synthetic oil ensures the line guide tracks effortlessly, maximizing your distance with lighter lures.
Main Gears and Shifting Hub (The Power Train)
The 2-speed system requires a balance. Apply a thin, even coat of high-viscosity gear grease to the outer teeth of the gears. However, for the internal shifting pawls, use a light drop of oil rather than heavy grease. Thick grease on the shifting pawls can "glue" them in place, preventing the reel from shifting into low-gear power when you hook a large fish.
Phase 4: Reassembly and Calibration
-
Rebuild the Shifting Bridge: Carefully re-seat the shifting pawls and springs into the main gear. Place the pinion gear into the yoke and seat the dual-gear stack on the drive shaft.
-
Bearing Lubrication: Place one drop of Deuthlon oil into each cleaned ball bearing.
-
Levelwind Integration: Reinstall the worm gear and line carriage. Place a drop of oil on the pawl before tightening the cap.
-
Closing the Reel: Realign the side plates and tighten the thumb screws.
Technical Performance Check
Once reassembled, test the 2-speed feature: Tighten the drag, hold the spool firmly with your thumb, and turn the handle. You should feel a distinct mechanical "click" or shift in resistance as the reel engages the low-gear power ratio. With Deuthlon oil on the oscillation parts and fresh grease on the drive teeth, your Ambassadeur 6500C3 2-Speed 01-03 will operate with modern precision and classic power.
