Comprehensive Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6001B (12-00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6001B, specifically the "12-00" production variant, is a left-hand drive (indicated by the '1' in 6001) round reel known for its bronze bushings and specialized finish. This model is a durable workhorse, but because it relies on a synchronized levelwind system, it requires precise lubrication to maintain a smooth retrieve and effective casting distance.
Follow this guide to perform a deep-clean and professional service on the 6001B.
1. External Teardown and Cleaning
Since this is a left-hand drive reel, the handle and drive assembly are located on the left side plate.
-
Handle Assembly Removal: Unscrew the handle nut cover, remove the 10mm handle nut, and lift away the handle. Remove the star drag wheel and the curved tension washers. Note their orientation for reassembly.
-
Accessing the Frame: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the left side plate. Carefully pull the side plate away.
-
Spool Extraction: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the centrifugal brake weights on the spool spindle. Ensure they are free of debris and move easily on their pins.
-
Cleaning: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a degreasing solvent. Use a soft brush to remove old, hardened grease from the gear teeth.
2. Drivetrain Lubrication (Grease)
The internal gears are subject to high torque during the retrieve. Protecting the brass-to-steel interface is essential to prevent "gear growl."
-
Main Gear: Apply a thin, even coat of Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the large brass main gear. This grease is formulated to stay in place under pressure, providing a protective film that dampens vibration.
-
Pinion Gear: Coat the Pinion Gear and the yoke slots with Deuthlon Grease. This ensures the gear slides smoothly on the spool shaft when you engage the reel from free-spool to retrieve.
3. Levelwind and Idler Gear Optimization (Oil)
The 6001B utilizes a synchronized levelwind, meaning the line guide travels back and forth during the cast. To maximize distance, you must minimize the friction of this mechanically linked system.
-
Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Oil to the worm shaft (the spiraled rod). This light-viscosity oil allows the line guide pawl to track with near-zero resistance, which is critical for maintaining spool momentum.
-
Idler Gears: Locate the plastic Idler Gears on the frame. These synchronize the spool's rotation with the levelwind. Lubricate the idler gear teeth and their mounting posts strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Avoid using grease here; grease is too viscous and acts as a brake on your spool during the cast.
4. Bushing and Spool Shaft Care
The 6001B typically utilizes oil-impregnated bronze bushings rather than ball bearings. These require regular lubrication to prevent heat buildup.
-
Bushing Service: Clean the bushings located in the side plate and tension cap with a cotton swab and solvent. Once dry, apply one to two drops of Deuthlon Oil to each.
-
Spool Spindle: Wipe the ends of the spool shaft clean. Apply a microscopic film of Deuthlon Oil to the tips where they contact the bushings and tension shims.
5. Reassembly and Tuning
-
Re-seat the Spool: Place the spool into the frame, ensuring the centrifugal weights are seated correctly.
-
Mount the Side Plate: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft. Slide the side plate on and tighten the thumb screws finger-tight.
-
Handle and Drag: Reinstall the star drag wheel, the handle, and the locking nut. Ensure the spring washers are "nested" (facing each other) to provide the correct tension range.
-
Final Adjustment: Tighten the mechanical brake knob until the spool has just a minute amount of lateral "knock." This setting provides the best balance between casting distance and component longevity.
