Technical Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000Ca (06-01)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000Ca, specifically the "06-01" foot-number variant, is a precision-engineered round reel favored for its durability and classic synchronized levelwind system. Maintaining the "Ca" series requires a specific focus on reducing the mechanical drag inherent in a reel where the line guide moves during the cast. By using high-performance lubricants and following a structured teardown, you can ensure this reel operates with modern smoothness.
1. Systematic Disassembly
Before applying fresh lubricants, the reel must be stripped to remove old, contaminated grease and metallic debris.
-
Remove the Drive Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully pull the side plate assembly away from the frame to reveal the gear bridge and the spool.
-
Extract the Spool: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the centrifugal brake blocks located on the spool's brake hub. These must be clean and bone-dry to provide consistent braking force.
-
Cleaning the Components: Submerge the brass main gear and the pinion gear in a degreasing solvent. Use a soft brush to scrub the teeth, ensuring no old grease remains in the valleys of the gear teeth.
2. Drivetrain and Load-Bearing Lubrication (Grease)
The drivetrain components are subject to high torque and require a lubricant that provides a persistent protective film between metal surfaces.
-
Main Gear: Apply a light, even coating of Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the large brass main gear. This high-tack grease prevents metal-on-metal galling and dampens gear vibration during a heavy retrieve.
-
Pinion Gear: Coat the Pinion Gear and the yoke slots with Deuthlon Grease. Because the pinion gear slides on the spool shaft to engage the drive, this grease ensures the transition from free-spool to "strike" is seamless and silent.
3. Levelwind and Oscillation Maintenance (Oil)
The 06-01 model features a synchronized levelwind that is mechanically linked to the spool. To maximize casting distance, you must minimize the friction of this linkage.
-
Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Oil to the worm shaft (the spiraled rod). This low-viscosity oil allows the line guide pawl to oscillate rapidly without the "stickiness" associated with grease.
-
Idler Gears: Locate the plastic Idler Gears on the frame and side plate. These gears bridge the power from the spool to the levelwind. Lubricate these gears and their mounting posts strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Using grease on these plastic parts creates parasitic drag, which acts as a brake on the spool during a cast.
4. Bearing and Spool Shaft Care
The "Ca" series utilizes stainless steel ball bearings to support the spool. These require precision lubrication to maintain high RPMs.
-
Ball Bearings: Flush the bearings in solvent and dry them completely. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Oil to each. Excessive oil can create hydraulic resistance, which actually slows down the bearing.
-
Spool Spindle: Wipe the ends of the spool shaft clean. Apply a microscopic film of Deuthlon Oil to the tips where they contact the tension shims inside the adjustment caps.
5. Reassembly and Function Check
-
Reinstall the Spool: Place the spool into the frame, ensuring the brake weights are properly positioned on their pins.
-
Seat the Side Plate: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft and slide the side plate flush against the frame. Tighten the thumb screws finger-tight.
-
Handle Assembly: Replace the star drag wheel, the handle, and the locking nut. Ensure the spring washers are "nested" (facing each other) to provide the correct tension range.
-
Final Adjustment: Tighten the mechanical brake knob until the spool has just a minute amount of lateral "knock." This is the optimal setting for both distance and bearing protection.
