Precision Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000Ca (06-00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000Ca, specifically the "06-00" foot-number variant, is a standout model featuring the classic "a" series frame and a synchronized levelwind system. This reel is built for durability, but because it relies on a high-speed spool rotation and a mechanically linked line guide, the friction points must be managed with specific lubricants. Using the correct combination of oil and grease will transform this reel from a standard workhorse into a precision casting tool.
1. Disassembly and Inspection
A proper repair begins with a methodical teardown to ensure all old, degraded lubricants are removed.
-
Side Plate Removal: Unscrew the three knurled thumb screws on the drive-side plate. Carefully pull the plate away to reveal the main gear and the pinion yoke.
-
Spool and Brake System: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the centrifugal brake blocks on the spool spindle. Ensure they are dry and move freely on their pins. If they are gummy, clean them with isopropyl alcohol to restore consistent casting control.
-
Cleaning the Gears: Remove the main gear and pinion gear. Soak them in a degreaser to remove old grease trapped in the teeth. This is crucial for the "Ca" model, as any debris in the high-tensile brass gears will be felt through the handle.
2. Drivetrain Lubrication (Grease)
The drivetrain carries the mechanical load of the retrieve and requires a lubricant that can withstand significant pressure.
-
Main Gear: Apply Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the brass main gear. Use a small brush to ensure the grease is worked into every tooth. This provides a cushioning effect that eliminates gear chatter and protects the metal from wear.
-
Pinion Gear: Apply Deuthlon Grease to the Pinion Gear and the slots of the pinion yoke. Since the pinion gear is the primary contact point between the drive system and the spool, this grease ensures a smooth, silent engagement every time you turn the handle.
3. Levelwind and Oscillation Maintenance (Oil)
The 6000Ca uses a synchronized levelwind, meaning the line guide moves during the cast. This creates a significant amount of friction that can be mitigated with high-performance oil.
-
Worm Gear: Clean the worm shaft (the spiraled rod) until it is shiny. Apply Deuthlon Oil along the entire length of the worm gear. This oil is light enough to allow the pawl to track at high speeds with minimal resistance, which is the key to achieving maximum casting distance.
-
Idler Gears: Locate the plastic Idler Gears that connect the spool to the worm shaft. Lubricate the idler gear teeth and their mounting posts strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Avoid using grease on these gears; grease is too viscous and will create "drag" that acts as a brake on your spool during the cast.
4. Bearing and Spool Shaft Care
The "Ca" model features stainless steel ball bearings that require low-viscosity lubrication to reach their maximum RPM potential.
-
Bearing Flush: Remove the spool bearings from the side plate and tension cap. Clean them thoroughly with solvent. Once dry, apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Oil to each bearing.
-
Mechanical Tensioners: Wipe the copper shims inside the tension knobs. Apply a tiny drop of Deuthlon Oil to the ends of the spool shaft where they contact these shims. This prevents friction-induced heat during long, high-speed casts.
5. Reassembly and Calibration
-
Re-seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the brake weights are properly aligned.
-
Attach the Side Plate: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft. Slide the side plate on and tighten the thumb screws finger-tight.
-
Handle and Drag: Reinstall the star drag wheel, the handle, and the locking nut. Ensure the spring washers under the star drag are "nested" (facing each other) to provide a smooth drag range.
-
Final Tuning: Adjust the mechanical brake knob until the spool has a tiny amount of side-to-side play. This ensures the bearings are not being pinched, allowing for the longest possible spin time.
