Comprehensive Technical Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C3 Hi Speed Winch (07-00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C3 Hi Speed Winch, specifically the "07-00" variant, is a specialized evolution of the classic round reel. Featuring a 5.3:1 gear ratio—notably faster than the standard 6000 models—this reel is designed for high-speed retrieves and heavy-duty "winching" power. To maintain the integrity of its precision-cut gears and the efficiency of its three-bearing system, a dedicated maintenance schedule using premium lubricants is required.

1. Advanced Teardown and Cleaning

Because the Hi Speed Winch is often used for aggressive techniques, dirt and salt can migrate deep into the gear housing.

  • Accessing the Internals: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the handle side plate. Carefully pull the plate assembly away from the frame.

  • Spool Maintenance: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the centrifugal brake system on the spool hub. Ensure the brake blocks slide freely on their pins; any sticking will lead to erratic casting and potential backlashes.

  • Degreasing the Drivetrain: Submerge the main gear and pinion gear in a high-quality solvent. Use a soft brush to remove old, contaminated lubricant from the gear teeth. Clean the Idler Gear (the plastic gear mounted to the frame) to ensure it rotates without resistance.

2. High-Torque Lubrication (Grease)

The "Winch" designation implies high pressure on the gear teeth. Protecting these surfaces from galling is essential for a smooth retrieve.

  • Main Gear: Apply a precise coating of Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the large brass main gear. This grease is engineered to stay on the teeth even under the high centrifugal forces of a 5.3:1 retrieve, providing a persistent protective film.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the Pinion Gear and the yoke (the cradle that supports it) with Deuthlon Grease. This facilitates smooth engagement and protects the gear during the high-stress transition from free-spool to retrieve.

3. High-Speed Oscillation Maintenance (Oil)

The 6000C3 utilizes a synchronized levelwind. Because the gears turn faster in this model, reducing friction in the oscillation system is the key to maintaining casting distance.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Oil to the worm shaft. This light-viscosity oil allows the line guide pawl to track at high speeds without friction-induced heat or drag.

  • Idler Gears: These plastic gears connect the spool to the levelwind system. Lubricate the Idler Gears and their mounting posts strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Using grease on these gears creates "sludge" that acts as a brake, significantly reducing your casting performance.

4. Bearing and Spool Shaft Calibration

The "C3" designation indicates a three-bearing system (two on the spool, one in the instant anti-reverse).

  • Ball Bearings: Flush the spool bearings with solvent and dry them completely. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Oil to each bearing. This oil provides the necessary film strength for high-speed rotation while allowing the bearings to reach maximum RPMs effortlessly.

  • Spool Shaft: Wipe the spool shaft clean and apply a microscopic film of Deuthlon Oil to the ends where they meet the tension shims.

5. Reassembly and Quality Control

  1. Reinstall the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the centrifugal weights are seated.

  2. Mount the Side Plate: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft and the anti-reverse bearing. Slide the plate flush and tighten the thumb screws.

  3. Handle and Drag Stack: Reassemble the star drag and handle. Ensure the spring washers are properly nested to provide the full range of drag pressure.

  4. Operational Test: Disengage the spool and spin it; it should be silent and balanced. Engage the reel and turn the handle; the levelwind should track smoothly across the spool without hesitation.
