Technical Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C (99-03 Red)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C, produced in the vibrant red finish between 1999 and 2003, is a robust, synchronized levelwind reel that remains a favorite for its simplicity and cranking power. This specific era of production features high-tensile brass gearing and a dual ball-bearing spool support system. Proper maintenance is essential to prevent "gear growl" and to maintain the effortless free-spool that makes these reels legendary.
Follow this systematic guide to clean, repair, and lubricate your 6000C.
1. Disassembly and Preliminary Inspection
Start by creating an organized workspace to keep track of the various shims and small parts.
-
Side Plate Removal: Unscrew the three knurled thumb screws on the handle-side plate. Pull the assembly away from the frame.
-
Spool and Brakes: Slide the spool out. Take note of the two white centrifugal brake weights on the spool spindle. If they appear flattened or gummy, they should be cleaned or replaced to ensure consistent casting control.
-
The Cleaning Phase: Use a parts cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to strip old, oxidized grease from the main gear and pinion. Ensure the frame is wiped clear of any salt or sand buildup.
2. Drivetrain Service (Grease)
The internal gears are subject to high torque and require a lubricant that provides a strong protective film.
-
Main Gear: Apply Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the large brass main gear. Use a small brush to distribute the grease evenly. This high-tack lubricant ensures the gears mesh silently and prevents wear under the strain of heavy lures or fish.
-
Pinion Gear: Apply Deuthlon Grease to the pinion gear and the yoke (the part that moves the gear in and out of engagement). This ensures a crisp, smooth transition when you turn the handle to re-engage the drive after a cast.
3. Levelwind and Oscillation Maintenance (Oil)
Because the Ambassadeur 6000C features a synchronized levelwind, the worm gear and idler gears move during the cast. Minimizing friction here is the most effective way to increase casting distance.
-
Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Oil to the worm shaft (the spiraled rod). This oil allows the pawl to track back and forth with minimal resistance. Unlike grease, this oil won't trap as much debris, keeping the oscillation smooth.
-
Idler Gears: Locate the plastic Idler Gears on the frame and side plate. These synchronize the spool to the levelwind. Lubricate these gears and their mounting posts strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Avoid using grease here, as it creates "parasitic drag" that significantly slows down the spool during a cast.
4. Bearing and Spool Care
The "C" in the model name signifies the use of stainless steel ball bearings for spool support.
-
Bearing Lubrication: Remove the bearings from the side plate and the tension cap. Once they are cleaned and dried, apply one drop of Deuthlon Oil to each. This provides high-speed protection without the "sludge" effect of heavier oils.
-
Spool Shaft: Wipe the ends of the spool shaft clean and apply a microscopic film of Deuthlon Oil where the shaft contacts the bearings and tension shims.
5. Reassembly and Function Test
-
Re-seat the Spool: Slide the spool into the frame, making sure the centrifugal weights are clicked into the "on" or "off" position as desired.
-
Attach Side Plate: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft. Press the side plate flush and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Handle and Star Drag: Replace the star drag wheel (ensuring the curved washers are properly oriented to provide tension), then the handle and locking nut.
-
Final Tuning: Adjust the mechanical brake knob until there is only a minute "tick" of lateral spool movement. This setting provides the best balance between distance and bearing longevity.
