Professional Service Manual: Maintaining the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C (05-00)

The Ambassadeur 6000C (05-00) is a high-performance variant of the classic round reel series, distinguished by its use of ball bearings (indicated by the "C") rather than bushings. This specific "05-00" production run is a favorite for anglers seeking a blend of vintage feel and modern casting speed. To maintain its high-RPM capabilities, a precise lubrication schedule using advanced synthetics is required.

Phase 1: Precision Disassembly and Degreasing

Because the 6000C utilizes ball bearings, cleanliness is paramount. Even microscopic debris can hamper the casting distance of this model.

  1. Removing the Drive Assembly: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate. Pull the plate away from the frame and remove the spool. Take care not to lose the centrifugal brake weights attached to the spool's spindle.

  2. Accessing the Gear Train: Remove the handle nut, handle, and star drag. Unscrew the side plate screws to reveal the main gear and the drag stack. Carefully remove the drive shaft and the pinion gear held within the yoke.

  3. Levelwind Breakdown: Unscrew the pawl cap on the underside of the line carriage. Remove the pawl, then slide the worm gear out from the frame housing.

  4. Cleaning Protocol: Submerge all metal gears, the worm shaft, and the ball bearings in a high-quality solvent. Use a soft brush to ensure all old, hardened lubricants are removed from the teeth of the main gear and the grooves of the worm shaft.

Phase 2: Advanced Lubrication with Deuthlon

To optimize the 6000C (05-00) for maximum smoothness and longevity, we utilize Deuthlon lubricants. Their specialized formulas are designed to bond to metal surfaces, providing protection that outlasts standard mineral-based products.

Applying Deuthlon Reel Grease

Grease should be applied to parts that experience high pressure and lower rotational speeds.

  • Main Gear and Pinion Gear: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of both gears. This grease creates a ceramic-reinforced barrier that prevents metal-on-metal wear, ensuring the retrieve remains silent and powerful even under the strain of a heavy fish.

  • Clutch and Yoke: Lightly coat the mechanical "sliding" parts of the clutch assembly to ensure a smooth transition into free-spool mode.

Applying Deuthlon Reel Oil

Oil is reserved for the parts that must spin with the least amount of resistance possible.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm gear. Using oil here instead of grease allows the line guide to oscillate rapidly during the cast without creating "drag" on the spool.

  • Idler Gears: These gears link the spool to the levelwind system. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to keep these gears turning effortlessly, which is essential for maintaining the 6000C's signature casting distance.

  • Ball Bearings: Add one drop of oil to each of the stainless steel ball bearings. This provides the low-viscosity lubrication needed for high-speed rotation.

Phase 3: Reassembly and Testing

  1. The Levelwind: Reinsert the oiled worm gear and secure the pawl. Ensure the line guide moves smoothly across the frame.

  2. The Drive Stack: Reinstall the greased pinion and main gear. Reassemble the drag washers in their specific sequence.

  3. Closing the Reel: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the brake weights are seated. Reattach the right side plate and secure the thumb screws.

  4. Final Check: Rotate the handle to ensure the gears mesh perfectly. The Deuthlon grease should provide a buttery-smooth feel, while the Deuthlon oil on the levelwind and idlers should allow the reel to spin freely with minimal effort.

By following this maintenance routine, your Ambassadeur 6000C (05-00) will remain a top-tier casting machine, protected against the elements and optimized for peak performance.
